For soprano, baritone, mixed choir and orchestra.
The cantata «The Iceberg» was commissioned by the Russian conductor Sergey Inkov in 2002, and premiered in Tromsø in 2003.
The commission has it’s origin in the status the Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanist and Nobel Prize Winner Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) still has in Russia, Ukraine and Armenia.
The idea for this work came along when reading Kristofer Uppdal’s (1878-1961) expressionist poem about the constantly growing iceberg; the iceberg which moved towards the south, but in spite of this was growing bigger and bigger.
With this iceberg in mind- my thoughts went to all those women in Nansen’s life who were awaiting a sign from him during all his journeys. What about their longings, lives and songs? Nansen’s first wife, the concert-singer Eva Sars (1858-1907) gave birth to five children with Nansen. She is a central character in the cantata.
In the first movement she sings in Norwegian «Kom sol, kom sunna» («Come Sun, Come from the South») This is a love song, a scream for warmth from the one she loves, but who is away on a journey.
In this movement the baritone soloist sings a few lines from Kristofer Uppdal’s poem in Russian. Nansen was a global man, and this movement is a metaphor for Nansen as a wandering iceberg, who fought in the icescape, with - and against the forces of the nature.
Here the choir is doing it’s entrance. The choir is a metaphor for all the other of us. The people of the world - those Nansen wanted to create a better world for. The choir sings in English about the elements of the nature - to a text by the English poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953).
This is a reflecting and poetical movement for orchestra. It opens with a short duet between the soloists. She with the prayer «Kom sol, kom sunnan» («Come Sun, Come from the South»). He still in the icescape.
The past, our time and the future comes together. These three languages are mixed, and the choir keeps on with singing Dylan Thomas’ text; «The Born Sea, Praised the Sun». The movement ends with a praise to the life and the creation.
