Foreword
This collection comprises a selection of music that over the last few years I have performed around Christmas time with various choirs, notably Lloyd’s Choir in London who, in almost every case, gave the first performances.
As you will see, there is quite a mixture of styles and levels of difficulty. For example, Jingle Bells is light-hearted whereas O Magnum Mysterium is somewhat more serious. The Bell Carol is fairly straightforward whereas The Twelve Days of Christmas is rather more challenging.
Whilst the primary purpose of this book is to enhance your choir’s repertoire for concerts and services during the festive season, some of the pieces (Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind and A Cradle Song) have proved useful at other times of the year. This is particularly true of the Isaiah Introit which has been sung for Remembrance as well as for Advent.
Whilst the Bell Carol and That Yonge Child are for choir with organ, most of the other numbers are originally intended to be sung a cappella . Where an optional accompaniment has been added (for organ, piano, harp, orchestra or brass) or if there is an alternative version, this is indicated in the score and will be available from the publishers.
Recordings of most of the carols in this book can be heard if you visit www.jacquescohen.co.uk
