Memory is a prerequisite for creation. As in the Greek myth of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory and mother of the nine muses— those who in turn have given us the various forms of art.

All that our modern civilization collectively holds in memory, both of good and of evil, is unfortunately not allowed to shape our sense of right and wrong. If it were, the world would look different today. Through memory, hope is created, but also despair. Through memory, we create.

Like Memories for strings consists of four interconnected parts. They are bound together by silence. I have sought either to let the ideas simply arise and then pursue them, or—as in Part II—to take a concrete memory, a previously used idea, and contemplate and develop it anew.
