- organ Music from Nidaros Cathedral
Med disse fire orgelverkene kommer min første samling med orgelmusikk. Etter gjennom mange år å ha improvisert over salmemelodier i gudstjenester og konserter i Nidarosdomen oppstod et ønske om å skrive ned noe av dette. Tonespråket er relativt tonalt, men kirketoneartene og Olivier Messiaens modi er alltid viktige inspirasjonskilder i mine improvisasjoner og komposisjoner, også her. Jeg har stort sett bare antydet styrkegrader, som sier noe om hva jeg ønsker skal framheves dynamisk. Disposisjonen vil være så forskjellig fra de ulike instrumentene de spilles på, så det gis stor frihet til bla. valg av solostemmer.
Det finnes utallige fine orgelverker over den vakre gregorianske melodien «Ave maris stella», og jeg ønsket å skrive en improvisata for barokkorgelet i Nidarosdomen. Jeg prøver i min komposisjon å finne et tonespråk som kan kle et historisk instrument, et verk som også kan spilles i veksel med en vokal framføring av den gregorianske hymnen.
Toccata over «Deilig er jorden» ble komponert som postludium til julaftensgudstjeneste i Nidarosdomen. Denne sterke jule- og pilegrimssalmen ble opprinnelig skrevet som er protestsalme. I avslutningen av denne komposisjonen har jeg lagt inn en frase av den ukrainske nasjonalsangen, som en hyllest til et folk som er utsatt for umenneskelige lidelser fra et angripende regime, og som en protest mot all krig og urett som rammer uskyldige mennesker.
Improvisata over «Eg veit i himmerik ei borg» ble bestilt av min kollega i Nidarosdomen, Brita Sjöberg da hun skulle spille konserter med nyere norsk musikk i utlandet. Den minimalistiske antydningen av melodien i starten av stykket er en mer søkende tilnærming til denne kjente folketonen, og melodien kommer i sin helhet først i den avsluttende koralsatsen. Dersom man ønsker et mer «triumferende» uttrykk i avslutningen kan man bruke akkordene som utgangspunkt for en improvisert toccata.
Det siste stykket er også en improvisata, her med utgangspunkt i folketonen til «Jeg råde vil alle i ungdommens dage», fra Innfjorden i Romsdal. Komposisjonen ble bestilt i forbindelse med restaureringen av det historisk Albrechtsenorgelet (opprinnelig fra 1840) i Voll kyrkje i Måndalen.
IMPRESSIONS – Organ Music from Nidaros Cathedral
With these four organ works comes my first collection of organ music. After many years of improvising on hymn melodies during services and concerts in Nidaros Cathedral, the wish arose to write some of these down. The musical language is relatively tonal, but the church modes and Olivier Messiaen’s modes have always been important sources of inspiration in my improvisations and compositions, also here. I have generally only indicated dynamics as suggestions of what I wish to be emphasized, leaving much freedom to the performer. The disposition of stops will vary greatly from one instrument to another, so there is ample room for individual interpretation, for instance in the choice of solo stops.
There are countless beautiful organ works based on the Gregorian chant Ave maris stella, and I wanted to compose a piece for the baroque organ in Nidaros Cathedral. In this composition I have tried to find a musical language that suits a historical instrument – a work that can also be performed in alternation with a vocal performence of the Gregorian hymn.
The Toccata on “Fairest Lord Jesus” (Deilig er jorden) was composed as a postlude for the Christmas Eve service in Nidaros Cathedral. This powerful Christmas and pilgrimage hymn was originally written as a protest song. At the end of the piece, I have included a phrase from the Ukrainian national anthem, as a tribute to a people subjected to inhuman suffering by an invading regime, and as a protest against all war and injustice inflicted upon innocent people.
The Improvisata on “Eg veit i himmerik ei borg” (I Know of a Castle in Heaven) was commissioned by my colleague in Nidaros Cathedral, Brita Sjöberg, when she was preparing concerts of contemporary Norwegian music abroad. The minimalist hint of the melody at the beginning of the piece represents a more searching approach to this well-known folk tune, with the melody only appearing in its entirety in the concluding chorale setting. If a more “triumphant” conclusion is desired, the chords may serve as a foundation for an improvised toccata.
The final piece is on the hymn, based on the folk tune Jeg råde vil alle i ungdommens dage (I Would Advise All in the Days of Youth), from Innfjorden in Romsdal. The composition was commissioned in connection with the restoration of the historic Albrechtsen organ (originally from 1840) in Voll Church in Måndalen.

Petra Bjørkhaug (b. 1964) has been the Cathedral Organist at Nidaros Cathedral since 2007, responsible for both solo and liturgical organ playing. She is educated as a organist and music teacher from the Trøndelag Music Conservatory (NTNU). In addition, she has studied piano and composition, and holds a master’s degree in organ improvisation from the Norwegian Academy of Music. She is also active as a choir conductor, composer, and arranger, having composed/improvised organ music for performances at Trøndelag Theatre, arranged Sami hymns, composed mass music for choir. She composed music to the CD recording “MOR” with the Nidaros Cathedral Choir, and for this work, she was awarded the Music Publishers’ Prize (Musikkforleggerprisen) in 2025.
