Program notes “Everybody Talk About Freedom” is a rap song. Rock n’ Roll back beats, blues riffs, and funky bass lines drive the music under the rap lyrics. Commissioned by Canadian percussionist, Beverley Johnston, it is for prepared marimba and rhythmic spoken text. Aluminum foil strips cover the bars of the marimba, creating a sound reminiscent of electric guitar distortion. The lyrics talk about political and personal freedom from the perspective of brave women, men, and children making sacrifices for the sake of their rights. “Everybody Talk About Freedom” is inspired by their courage, and dedicated to the power of free speech.

Rap Text (without repeats) He She wanna be wanna be wanna be He She wanna be wanna be Free He She wanna be He She wanna be He She wanna be wanna be Free I see You, You see Me I say everybody wanna be Free What we do, What we say Where we go makes everybody know, hey! Performance notes Optional Singing: For marimbists who like to sing, melodies and short riffs in the solo marimba sections such as mm. 83 – 92, 96, 98, 102, 107 -116 can be played and sung together, with rhythmic jazz vocalizations such as “ba da da” or simple humming. An option for deeper voices is to choose interesting low LH phrases instead of doubling melodies in the RH. Optional written pitches are given in mm. 166, 170, 172, and 174 if the player would like to sing the recurring phrase at the end of the piece. Additional Rapper or Group of Rappers: For marimbists who do not want to perform the rap text themselves, the piece can be done as a duo, with another performer doing the rap. The piece can also be performed with a group of rappers doing the lyrics along with the marimba. It gives a different energy to the piece, and can be performed with university students, high school, and even younger children’s choirs as well, because the text is relatively easy to memorize. Prepared Marimba: Lay two long strips of aluminum cooking foil across the upper and lower manual of the marimba, rolling it around the edges to fasten it on the top and bottom bars of each manual. It creates a sound that is reminiscent of the distortion of an electric guitar, particularly in the lower register. Three medium marimba mallets, and one bass mallet: L to R, 1 2 3 4. Mallet 1 on the outside of the LH is a heavier softer bass mallet to create tones in the bass register that resemble an electric bass, with the distortion effect of the aluminum foil. Dampening: Indicated with an x, dampening the marimba bars is easy by pressing the mallet head onto the bar. When the x is over or under notes, dampen as the note is played. When the x is beside a note or chord in the LH, play the notes normally, and then dampen in rhythm on the next beat, as in m.5, when the RH plays the next notes. Dampening adds to the feel of the music being more in the style of rock n’ roll blues, with shorter and longer ringing bass notes, and more rhythmic off beat sounds like snare drum, or closed hi hat. Ghosted Notes: Chords appearing in ( ) such as in m. 95 are to be played almost not heard. It keeps the energy of the rhythm moving forward even though it is barely audible, and adds subtlety to the rhythm. Vocals: The rap song text is spoken rhythmically, notated in the music as a nonpitched percussion line, with the lyrics underneath. Words are written more as they are pronounced, and not necessarily with correct spelling. Lyric Notation: Approximate medium, low, high intonations are indicated with non- pitched notation for the speaking voice. When voice inflection changes on the same word, as in m. 39, “Oooooo” it is in indicated with a gliss marking, and ends suddenly with the higher pitched “Sh” which is short and punctuated.

Pronunciation: Words beginning with vowels, such as “I” are spoken or sung with a slight accent at the beginning to have a more rhythmic sound. Word combinations that occur rapidly such as “Don’t know what to say” with two hard syllables between words, “Don’t know” and “What to” – the “t” from “don’t” is dropped, and the “t” from “what” is dropped, so the rhythm rolls forward, without hard syllables in a row slowing it down. The “t” is also dropped from end of words like “about.” Percussive Vocalizations: The “ts ts” is a short, accented percussive sound that imitates a closed hi hat, such as in m. 10. “Bung Ki Kong” vocalizes a bass drum and low cowbell groove. “Bung” and “Kong” are low, and said with a relaxed mouth, and “Ki” is higher. Mics: A vocal mic possibly with an EQ boost of the bass tones in the voice will balance the rap text and marimba. Marimba mics can also be used, if desired. Additional Players / Break Dancers: The piece can be performed with additional ensemble players adding hand drums, drum set, or beat box solos with the body. Break-dancers can also be incorporated into the performance. Text Spelling: the word “revol oooooo she” is spelled and pronounced this way to allow the piece to be performed in areas of the world where the word “revolution” would not be allowed to be sung in public.
