Kjell Samkopf (1952) is a composer and a percussionist. He was born and raised in Brerum outside Oslo. In 1977 he received his diploma in composition from The Norwegian State Academy of Music, tutored by Professor Finn Mortensen. He continued his studies there with Per Erik Thorsen (Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra) and Einar Nielsen (Royal Academy of Music, Arhus, Denmark), and received a degree the following year in percussion. In 1978-79 Samkopf studied sonology and electroacoustic music at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, Holland, with Dr. Werner Kaegi. He has had rwo periods of study in the United States: at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1979, where he studied jazzvrbraphone, and in 1981 at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York.

Kjell Samkopf has been working as a timpanist of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and a percussionist in The Norwegian State Opera Orchestra. From 1975 - 1982 he worked freelance as a percussionist in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. During the years 1979-83 he was member of the ensemble of Ny Musikk (the Norwegian section of ISCM), and in the period 1980-85 he was a member of the contemporary music ensemble Octoband. He has also had responsibility for the production of large percussion concerts, such as the presentations of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis in Oslo in 1983 and 1985, respectively. Kjell Samkopf has also been very active as a percussion teacher. He has taught at the Eastern Norway Conservatory of Music, and is now Professor and head of the percussion department at The Norwegian State Academy of Music. He has also published a tutorial book: "Praktisk trommeskole", written for beginners. During recent years Kjell Samkopf has concentrated on his work as a composer and a soloist in his own compositions for solo percussion and electronics. His interest in Numerology is evident in his composition technique. Numerology is an occult science that, based on the background of a persons name and date of birth, can reveal information about his or her personality and destiny - as does Astrology from the positions of the heavenly bodies. Calculations from Numerology are allowed to determine different musical dimensions, such as melody, rhythm, form and instrumentation. This is particularly evident in Samkopfs works Associations, Den I l. Desember 1984, the dance productions Aqua and Tide, and the work Harstad for symphonic band and percussion soloist. Kjell Samkopf was engaged as festival composer for the Festival of Northern Norway in 1985. Samkopf has, in addition to a number of compositions for percussion, written orchestral and chamber music, music for radio, TV, film, theatre and dance. He has also written several jazz compositions. His works have been performed in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, France and the USA.

Old no.2000 It is a hundred years since the composer John Philip Sousa wrote his famous marches and little has changed in the intervening years - the instruments, their range and the technical

possibilities they offer their players are more or less the same. Marching musicians have not changed either - they still have two legs of equal length. With this understanding as my starting point - I chose to compose an old-fashioned march, well-grounded in tradition. It is no problem to just add it to our old book of marches, hence the title " Old no. 2000".
