you (i do not think) SATB + piano reduction approximate duration: 3’15” Commissioned by Choral Arts Initiative for the 2018 PREMIERE|Project Festival, Brandon Elliott, director This work features the first half of P. L. Thomas’ poem “you (i do not think).” As the lines organically grow into a more complicated thought, more performers and more harmonies are introduced. The light, clipped text of the beginning and end contrast the fullness of the more gentle words. What I appreciate most about this and so many other poems by P. L. Thomas is its ambiguity. Though the text references “love,” there is nothing so concrete to specify romantic love. The speaker could just as easily be describing a friend they admire and set apart from others, one whose uniqueness is so natural that they cannot help but stand out. Performance notes: ❖ Eighth note equals eighth note through all meter changes. ❖ With the exception of the final two stanzas (maybe you, etc… who you have been…), the text should be sung in a clipped, staccato style, with just enough length to present the pitch and the syllable. ❖ The empty bars should allow for any residual sound in the hall to ring. Consider the written silences as equally as the written notes. ❖ In preparation of changing meters, performers should think more about the “groove” of the piece as opposed to strict time signatures. Practice speaking the words in rhythm before adding the notes to ensure the 3+2+2 rhythm is established. you (i do not think) (2013) P. L.
