Program Notes Yearning to Breathe Free was commissioned in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Ireland's Easter Rising. This setting of Emma Lazarus's iconic sonnet “The New Colossus,” which New Yorkers may recognize as the poem engraved inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, is above all an homage to the Irish immigrants who first settled in New York all those decades ago. Beginning with a sustained open fifth in the tenors and basses (emulating the drone of uilleann pipes), the piece begins quietly, gradually building to several climactic moments and shrinking back to softness after each, depicting the immigrants’ tempestuous journey across the Atlantic ocean. The melodic figures heard throughout the work are highly ornamented, and are meant to evoke the traditional Irish “sean-nós” style of singing. The final, most exciting climax arrives when the voice of the Statue of Liberty herself, “a mighty woman with a torch,” proclaims triumphantly that all are indeed welcome in this new land, and that she “lifts [her] lamp beside the golden door” for them.

In keeping with the text’s welcoming spirit, this piece is also written in honor of all refugees from the war in Syria.
