Oklahoman Nathan Jones (b. 1983) is a composer of art music published by Walton Music, GIA Publications, Southern Music Company and G. Schirmer. A devoted admirer of the beauty and deep emotional connection of the human voice, Nathan enjoys working with poetry. His choral music has been performed in Europe, Southeast Asia and throughout the United States. The American Record Guide has described his music as a “…feast of succulent modern harmonies." Frequently commissioned by choirs and wind ensembles of all abilities, Nathan’s style is earnest, melodic, and defined by elegant simplicity. His choral work, I would live in your love, was recorded by The Westminster Choir under the direction of Joe Miller and is commercially available.

from the composer— Marjory Wentworth’s poem, “What Shines,” is taken from her 2010 collection The Endless Repetition of an Ordinary Miracle. In 2013, I chose to set this poem to music for the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club, because Marjory, along with the piece's commissioner, Lindsay Pope, is an alumna of Mount Holyoke College. When Lindsay approached me to write a piece for her choir, I immediately thought of how special the connections would be for this project if I were to set a poem by an MHC alumna for an MHC alumna to premiere with current MHC students!

“What shines,” was premiered in 2013 in South Hadley, MA, by the Mount Holyoke Glee Club, with Lindsay Pope conducting. The piece makes use of many silent moments, reflecting the visual spaces Marjory uses in the poem. Throughout, I used polyphony, as well as many “shining” or “glimmering” harmonies. The piece should be paced in a manner resembling a reading of the poem. Although the tempo markings are generally slow, the piece itself should not “feel slow”; there should be motion in the vocal lines.
