About the piece: Before I discovered composing for choir, I was a fervent songwriter and wrote exclusively for piano and voice. This was my <irst choral composition, written for chamber performance at Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer of 1994 when I was 17 years old for the "boy back home." In the wisdom or fog of the teen years, I would daydream about what love truly was. As I pined away from summer camp, I imagined that I had found the Real Thing. It is now several decades later, and after a few bumps and bruises trying to <igure out just what "true love" actually is, I have discovered that this text is more about the journey of love and not about the destination. This poem, like great art, shifts and changes in meaning as the listener matures and grows in understanding. I imagine that "love" is like "art" in the same way— shifting in meaning over a lifetime of changing, but always bigger and more profound than one's limited experience with it.

About the text author: Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Although part of a prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived much of her life highly introverted. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a noted penchant for wearing white clothing and became known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, to even leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence. While Dickinson was a proli<ic private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime. Despite some unfavorable reception and skepticism regarding her literary prowess, Dickinson is now almost universally considered to be one of the most signi<icant of all American poets. About the composer: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds.
