About the piece: I. Shepherd, Shepherd: This is a spiritual included in John W. Work's collection of "American Negro Songs and Spirituals," published in 1940. It is also included in Ruth Crawford Seeger's collection "American Folk Songs for Christmas." Though two illustrious collectors included this beautiful song, it is little-known, possibly because it was not popularized by historic performances by the Jubilee Singers who brought awareness to the musical richness of African-American Choral Music and associated repertorie. I am spiritually drawn to this piece because it seems to taunt God, the great Sheperd, to keep His errant people, His sheep, from wandering off. The concept of speaking to God in such a cavalier way scandalizes me! I often sanitize my communication with him into something so formal, academic, and sterile, that it doesn't communicate anything of value at all and further reveals a belief in a distant and judgemental God. I am inspired by C. S. Lewis's relationship with God that he would dare to yell at Him after the untimely death of his beloved wife. This speaks to me of an authentic relationship with a personal God where the burden of divinity does not fall upon humanity to be perfect. God already knows my my heart even before it occurs to me to voice what's in it, if I have the courage to do so. This song reveals a very human perspective of abandonment in the absence of the necessary omnipotence to see His long-term plan. II. Personally, I absolutely adore the idea of the Christ child singing softly which was the concept that inspired the genesis of this arrangement. Much American folk music features the use of instruments. In the absence of available instruments, in the presence of a religious culture that may frown upon instrumental usage, and/or inUluenced by Irish culture that mimics instrumental textures as a form of "mouth music," this a cappella piece is fully orchestrated. I love the nature of the human voice that it can both deliver text as well as deliver an abstact timbre through the text. In this piece, there are both relationships between the text and the orchestration. When the Christ child sings, the instrumental texture shifts to "la." When the wind blows, the accompanimental texture is still text-driven, but on a more closed vowel [o] of "blow" to mimic the wind.
Performance Notes: I. Shepherd, Shepherd: Sing the two-note "sighing" slurs as in "Shepherd, Shepherd" with attention to putting weight on the Uirst note and releasing the weight off of the seocond. It should sound heavy and weary. II. Child of God: The "bm"s, "loo"s, and "la"s are meant to evoke an instrumental texture: "bm" is a plucked string timbre, sustained on the "m." "Loo" is a legato, sustained, and quiet wind timbre, much like a Ulute. "La" is a legato, sustained, and louder vocal timbre. For the purpose of this texture, the vocal timbre is simply a different color in the instrumental palette andis considered aninstrumental color in an orchestrated piece. Allow closed [u] vowels in "loo" to be naturally softer and open [É‘] in "la" to be naturally louder.

Choral Arrangements of American Folk Songs: In the relatively young United States, this is a timely and relative climate for singing the nation’s folk music considering the multicultural movement in a burgeoning “choral nation.” Choral singing and folk music share much in common to the beneKit of singers, listeners, and the nation’s people in general as it develops its collective song through shared singing. American folk music is a vital resource not only to our children and the people of our nation, but speciKically for its choristers. It is my fondest wish that choral directors will regularly program quality arrangements of this rich material with their ensembles and add to this body of repertoire. In doing so, may we realize the important work that choral musicians are doing in our home countries. May we further connect our communities separated over history and time, age, and national heritage. In our connecting, may we realize our spiritual and human endeavor that unites us: singing together.
About the composer: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds.
