Martin Benvenuto, Artistic Director about truth: Composed for treble voices with percussion, a basic djembe part has been provided. Conductors are invited to increase the percussion forces if desired. Shakers, sandpaper blocks, and additional low or high hand drums may be added and percussionists should feel free to improvise within the style. A simple piece--singers and conductor should give attention to how weight is navigated in the voice--being especially sensitive to syllabic stress and release. Tenuto markings are indicated throughout to help guide phrasal stress. The nature of the text may provide a portal for singer discussion about insecurities, self-doubt, and individual definitions of beauty versus societal ones.

This work feels especially personal for me, both in its familiar Southern references (having grown up in Arkansas) and in how it evokes memories of my mother. She was a constant encouragement--always believing in me, always telling me I was beautiful and strong.

Every young woman should have a force like this in her life--whether it is her own mother or someone else.

There is great power in "You are beautiful. You are enough."
