Program Notes:

I composed Through the Wildernesses of Worlds after returning home from walking the Camino de Santiago, a 400-mile pilgrimage in Spain beginning in Pamplona and ending in Santiago de Compostela. While it was certainly physically demanding, it proved to be an equally challenging journey of inward reflection. Nine months before embarking on the Camino, I attempted to take my own life, and those ensuing months were filled with difficult questions, including: How did I get here? What does true happiness look like? What, exactly, am I doing with my life? I may not have been able to answer all these questions, but even attempting to do so as I walked the Camino brought me closer than ever before to finding mental clarity, spiritual contentedness, and inner peace. Wildernesses is my attempt to translate this complex, turbulent, incredibly rewarding journey into art. I used a poem from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali as my primary text, and supplemented it with responses from fellow pilgrims in Santiago when I asked them why they decided to walk the Camino. Additionally, the mysterious words “for you, kiddo” appear a few times; I found this phrase scribbled on at least a dozen signposts and stones. These three texts form a single narrative which attempts to answer why we tackle such seemingly insurmountable challenges, whether that challenge is walking halfway across the country or simply finding the will to live. —EFD Full Text:

The time that my journey takes is long, and the way of it long. I came out on the chariot of the first gleam of light, 1 to prove to myself that I could… 2 for you, kiddo… 3 and pursued my voyage through the wildernesses of worlds, 1 because I needed time to think… to find myself… 2 leaving my track on many a star and planet. 1 because she always wanted to do this… 2 for you, kiddo… 3 I have knocked at every alien door, 1 to seek the truth… to rekindle my love with God… 2 for you, kiddo… 3 and wandered through all the outer worlds, to reach the innermost shrine, 1 to celebrate beating cancer… because we got engaged… because I want to live… 2 to reach the innermost shrine at the end. 1 because I want to LIVE… 2 for you, kiddo… 3 Excerpts from the twelfth poem in Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali, translated into English by William Rothenstein (public domain since 1992), adapted and altered by the composer. 1
