Many books and dissertations have been written on the sacred music that the Amish sing during their worship services, but little is known about their non-sacred music. In recent decades, ethnomusicologists have made an attempt to discover the folk singing traditions of these reserved but friendly people. The scholars have found that when the Amish migrated from Germany and Switzerland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they brought with them the traditional songs from those regions. These songs have been kept fresh through an oral tradition and have also been changed to echo the lives and culture of the Amish. Many of these songs cannot be found in any European folk music archives, but the Amish’s indisposition to change and their way of life has allowed these songs to be preserved. Three of the largest settlements of Amish communities in the United States are found in Holmes County, in central Ohio, Lancaster County, in south-eastern Pennsylvania, and Adams County, in north-eastern Indiana. I have chosen three songs that have been preserved by the communities in those three areas. While helping to spread and preserve these songs, your choir will enjoy the amusing yodeling of Mi Vater isch ä Chääser Gsii, the relaxed and beautiful harmonies of Schloof, Bobbeli, Schloof, and the exciting and pulsating rhythms of Reide, Reide, Geili!

Mi Vater isch ä Chääser Gsii My Father was a Cheesemaker is a yodeling love song from the Amish communities in Adams County, Indiana. The Pennsylvania Dutch speaking Amish of Ohio and Pennsylvania generally do not yodel and do not speak the same language as their Indiana brethren. The Amish from Indiana migrated from Switzerland and aptly speak a Bernese dialect of Swiss German. These Swiss Amish have retained many yodeling songs from the “old world” through an oral tradition. Mi Vater isch ä Chääser Gsii is unique to the Swiss Amish and cannot be found in any collection of Swiss folk songs or in the Swiss Folk Song Archive in Basel.

How to Yodel This song incorporates the singing technique called yodeling. This is when a singer abruptly and rapidly changes between the head register (or falsetto voice) and the chest register (or speaking voice). The passaggio is the Italian term for the break area between these two registers. Trained choral singers are usually taught to sing through the passaggio without any noticeable glitch in the voice, but yodeling encourages the singer to manipulate the passaggio by abruptly and noticeably switching back and forth from the different registers. Yodeling is a great way to teach the difference between the two registers, and it will also give the singers an opportunity to sing in a different and fun way. Each verse of the song should be sung using proper choral technique (singing smoothly through the passaggio). The yodeling will be indicated by arrows pointing down (↓) or arrows pointing up (↑). The arrows pointing down indicate to abruptly switch to the chest register while the arrows pointing up indicate to switch abruptly to the head register. The arrows point to the precise note where the change should occur. This abrupt switching of registers creates the yodel effect.

Swiss German Pronunciation Swiss German is the spoken language of the Swiss Amish from Adams County, and they are understood by other Swiss speakers.

While Swiss German looks similar to Standard German, the pronunciation is a little different. The IPA guide below is by no means exhaustive and refers only to the text of this score. Schloof, Bobbeli, Schloof Sleep, Baby, Sleep is a Pennsylvania Dutch lullaby. Its etymology is found in the German lullaby, Schlaf, Kindlein, Schlaf, but the Pennsylvania Dutch version has taken on a life of its own reflecting the lives of the Amish who still sing it. The melody can differ slightly from community to community; the one used in this arrangement hails from the Amish communities in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The English translation, written underneath the Pennsylvania Dutch, is more poetic than literal but retains the same sentiment. The song can be sung in Pennsylvania Dutch or in English. It is also optional to perform the song in one language and then repeat the song in the other language. This arrangement uses a relaxed tempo and beautiful harmonies while retaining the integrity of the original melody. Your choir will enjoy singing this rare gem.

Reide, Reide, Geili!

Ride and Ride the Pony! is a Pennsylvania Dutch nursery rhyme. There are various melodies and texts associated with Reide, Reide, Geili! that can differ from community to community. The particular tune used for this arrangement comes from Holmes County, Ohio and is similar to the English nursery rhyme, Ring Around the Rosie. Amish parents and grandparents will sing this rhyme while bouncing their toddlers on their knee. The bouncing is to imitate a horseback ride as the song begins. At the end of each verse, the adult suddenly drops their leg to imitate the child falling off the horse. The child falls to the floor amidst a peal of laughter. The song can be sung in either Pennsylvania Dutch or in English. This unique arrangement will lift your audience’s spirits as they are reminded of the songs of their youth, and your singers will enjoy its high energy and pulsating rhythms!

Pennsylvania Dutch Pronunciation Pennsylvania Dutch is the language spoken by the Amish communities in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and Holmes County, Ohio. The “Dutch” term is actually a mispronunciation of the word, “Deitsch” or “Deutsch” and has no association with the people of the Netherlands. The Pennsylvania “German” language was heavily influenced by the melting pot of languages in the MidAtlantic region, mainly Scotts and English. Over time, this language took on its own dialect and is now very different from its ancestral German. During the nineteenth century, the language was widely spoken by the citizens of Pennsylvania but almost died off by the middle of the twentieth century. The language is now preserved only through the Amish. During the first part of the twentieth century, there were a few attempts to formalize the spelling and pronunciation of the language, and there are now two competing models. One model follows the rules of American English; the other follows the rules of Standard German.

MARK TEMPLETON, born 1974, is an American choral composer, conductor, and countertenor.

Templeton’s music has been described by the Boston Music Intelligencer as “charming and entertaining, playing with homophony and polyphony, and having a winning way with neo-romantic sweet dissonances.” Some of his music is published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing, and he has recently started to self-publish. His music for men’s voices, including When I Hear Her I Have Wings, has been performed across the world at various international festivals and ACDA conventions. His Missa Brevis has recently been featured in a doctoral dissertation at Florida State University. Templeton is also a sought after performer and clinician. He currently sings countertenor with Vox Populi, Delaware's professional chamber choir. He resides with his wife, Becca, at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland, the oldest boarding school in the United States, where he is the director of choral activities, music theory, and music composition. He also enjoys coaching, playing, and watching soccer when he is not working. He is available for commission upon request.
