About the work Shakespeare’s stage play The Tempest is an extraordinary drama full of intrigue, sorcery, and betrayal. The play begins with its protagonist magically conjuring up a violent storm to shipwreck traveling political enemies. The imminent danger of the storm and approaching disaster inspires this choral setting of Act I. Listeners are thrown into the action: turbulent waves, brave sailors, desperate prayers, and a ship careening toward ruin. Glossary of terms and phrases In this piece, Shakespeare’s language is maintained as he wrote it with minimal adaptation to the dialogue. Because some words and phrases are unfamiliar to today’s singers, a glossary and pronunciation guide are provided below: Bestir: [bɪ ‘stɝ], “Get moving!”
Have care: “Pay attention!”
Blow, wind, if room enough: “Wind, blow as hard as you like, as long as we have enough room to sail without running aground.”
Lay her ahold: “Turn the ship”
Boatswain: [‘bo sən], an officer who supervises a ship’s deck crew
Mar: Hinder Mariner: A sailor Mischance: Misfortune
Bring her to try wi’th’ main course: “Turn the ship’s main sail to the wind.” Ships were referred to with feminine pronouns.
Pray now: “I implore you”
Command these elements to silence: “Instruct the stormy weather to be calm”
Yare(ly): [jɛɚ] or [‘jɛɚ li], “Quick!”
What cheer: “What’s up?”
