Miscellaneous Sonnets I. The Soulâ€™s Expression Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806â€“1861)

With stammering lips and insufficient sound I strive and struggle to deliver right That music of my nature, day and night With dream and thought and feeling interwound, And inly answering all the senses round With octaves of a mystic depth and height Which step out grandly to the infinite From the dark edges of the sensual ground. This song of soul I struggle to outbear Through portals of the sense, sublime and whole, And utter all myself into the air: But if I did it,â€”as the thunder-roll Breaks its own cloud, my flesh would perish there, Before that dread apocalypse of soul.

Program Notes Browning's narrative of the creative process depicts the artist struggling to find the balance between the (theoretical) authentic expression of the self and the fear of emotional destruction that might come with such a perfect realization. The viola acts as the primary counterpart to the soprano; the quartet as a whole alternates between accompanying the voice and offering its own take on the meaning of the text. The fluidity of the vocal line accentuates the struggles of the narrator as she attempts to discover her own voice, ultimately realizing that her greatest hope for achievement is also her greatest fear.

About the Composer Marjorie Halloran is an Austin-based composer, singer, and songwriter. She is the co-founder of the choral workshop at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, VT, where she received her MFA in composition with an emphasis in songwriting. Marjorie's compositions and arrangements have been performed by various choirs and chamber groups in California, Minnesota, Vermont, and Texas. She is the winner of the 2015-16 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, and a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018. www.marjoriehalloran.com
