James Weldon Johnson Born in the year 1871 in Jacksonville, Florida, James Weldon Johnson grew up studying English literature and music at the encouragement of his mother. After attending and graduating from Atlanta University, he took a job as a high school principal in Jacksonville. In 1900, he penned the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing" in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. The tune swelled in popularity, especially among black Americans and grew to be known as the "Negro National Anthem."

In 1901, he moved to New York and attained some success as a songwriter for Broadway alongside his composing brother, Rosamond. Five years later, he took a post with the U.S. consul to Venezuela and during this time published poetry and his novel, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. Later, he became the national organizer for the NAACP and served as editor for The Book of American Negro Poetry (Harcourt, 1922). Having lived a life helping people of differing ideologies work together for a common goal, James Weldon Johnson died in 1938.

Andrea Ramsey Andrea Ramsey is a composer, conductor, and music educator. Her teaching experiences range from work with adolescent and children’s voices to frequent guest conducting of all-state and honor choirs, to her current position as the Associate Director of Choral Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. An ASCAPlus award-winning composer, Andrea has over 80 published choral works in print. A native of Arkansas, she is an active member of ACDA, ASCAP, and NAfMe, and believes strongly in the positive impact created through the performance of meaningful choral music.

About "The Gift to Sing" James Weldon Johnson, author of this poem, was a leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance.

In this season following World War I, huge numbers of African Americans migrated to the industrial North from the economically depressed, agrarian South. An explosion of culture, poetry, music, and art ensued. One of the thriving musical forms of the Harlem Renaissance was Gospel music, which flourished in the urban churches of the North. I chose to write this tune in a gospel style as a nod to Johnson's ties with the Harlem Renaissance. Furthermore, the text seemed a fitting choice to honor the founder and artistic director of the Children's Chorus of Washington, Joan Gregoryk, who most certainly has "turned the gloom to cheerful day" for many a singer over the course of her lengthy and esteemed career with this organization.
