The First Snow Swiftly, softly without a sound Strange white fairies alight on the ground.

Lighter they are than thistle-down puffs.

Whiter they are than white fur muffs.

Cooler they are than coolest dew And smaller than any flower I grew.

Swiftly, silently covering the grass Covering the path where I need to pass Among the flowers, covering all With their white bodies as they fall, Swiftly, silently magical Snow Casts a spell on the world below.

Giving the firs a crystal edge, Dropping a kerchief of white on the hedge, Leaving the rose bush a billowy gown, A late chrysanthemum wearing a crown, A cushion of white on the garden wall, And a spread of silence over all. ~ Harriet Miller Hight
