Program Notes In the winter of our last year together as masters students at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, pianist and fellow composer Jonathan Hannau asked me if I, along with a small collective of other local composers, would compose a piece for him to play on a solo recital the following fall. Like Jon, I am deeply fascinated by celestial phenomena—illusions in the sky like the Northern Lights or the Belt of Venus—and among my favorites of his compositions is a highly atmospheric piece for solo cello entitled Fire Rainbow Cloud. I wanted to pay homage to this brilliant piece by crafting my own work inspired by my own favorite phenomenon: “sun dogs,” the appearance of three suns in the sky (a smaller one on each side of the larger, “real” sun) resulting from sunlight being refracted through ice crystal clouds.

My approach to depicting the sun dogs in a piece for solo piano was based on one relatively simple musical idea: quintal harmony, i.e. perfect fifths stacked on top of each other. Much of the harmonic material in Sun Dogs consists of at-least-three-note quintal chords, which represent the mystical experience of witnessing three suns in the sky.

These harmonies are gradually manipulated throughout, sometimes creating the illusion of bi- or tri-tonality, and the piece’s numerous melodic fragments interweave to evoke a simultaneous sense of awe and perplexion.
