Composer’s note: In September of 2017 I came across this post on Twitter:

The clever limericks this account frequently posts about politics and current events are usually meant to be humorous, but I found this one somber and deeply compelling. It describes the final voyage of the NASA spacecraft Cassini, which in 2017—at the end of its seven-year mission—deliberately plunged into Saturn's atmosphere, transmitting as much data and footage as it could back to NASA before burning up.

I contacted the Limericking account and asked permission to set the poem to music.

The account owner responded and gave me a tentative "yes," but didn't reveal his or her actual name. I was curious about who was behind this popular Twitter page, but I didn't have the right project lined up for a text like this, so I forgot about the idea for awhile. A year and a half later, the Nebraska Choral Directors Association asked me if I would compose a piece for their 2019 summer conference. I immediately thought about the Cassini limerick. I contacted the mystery poet again and received official permission to set the text. However, they referred to themselves only as "L," and it was clear their identity would remain a secret. I still have no idea who it is.

As another composer sang, "It's lonely out in space, on such a timeless flight."
