About the piece: This faux sea-chanty is a 0ictional account of the "Jennie June" which may or may not have played a role in helping homesteaders settle Redmond, WA. The Redmond Centennial Celebration highlighted the area with themes of "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow." Redmond is the homesite of Microsoft, other tech companies, and many new start-ups. This contemporary adventure- and fortune-seeking hearkens back to the settling of the area and forward to what sort of spirit of adventure will bring future homesteaders to the area. The muddy Squak River was so shallow, boats were said to be "sailing on the dew" and to take so long that boats would sail up in January and return in June. It was slow-going from Seattle to the Eastside until they got the right vessel for the job, though. The water was too shallow for paddle steamers, and the Jennie June was a much-beloved vessel with a propeller on the back to better navigate the shallow and dif0icult river.
Glossary: scow—a boat similar to a barge, often used to haul bulk freight scull—a light, narrow boat propelled with a pair of small oars steamer—a boat powered by a steam engine Willowmoor—the original 1976 farm settlement in Redmond, WA squaking—a loud, harsh noise. It is said that this is the sound the muddy “Squak River” (now the Sammamish River) made which each step. snag—a tree or branch embedded in a lake or stream bed and constituting a hazard to navigation shoal—a n area of shallow water, especially as a navigational hazard headwind—a wind blowing from directly in front, opposing forward motion Jennie June—an historic boat, named for a local personality, that navigated the area sidewheeler—a river boat propelled by two large paddle wheels, one on each side prop—a propeller Happy Valley—the historic name of much of agricultural Redmond, WA
About the composer: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds, including the Redmond Chorale.
