Papa hears you playin' when you think no one's payin' attention, when there is no mention of tears, and you're free to laugh.

Papa sees you dreamin' of a new day of freedom for a new way of being a child in this world.

Tukumbuke watoto (Remember the children) Too-koom-BOO-kay wah-TOH-toh /a/ is pronounced like the "a" in father. /e/ is pronounced like the "e" in they. /i/ is pronounced like the "ee" in see. /o/ is pronounced like the "o" in holy. /u/ is pronounced like the "oo" in loop. /ai/ is pronounced like "eye."

Performance Notes: * The drum can be a djembe, cajon, or something similar. Snare drum is right out. * The pianist is encouraged to ad lib and elaborate throughout. An optional improvisation is notated in measures 33-40, though the pianist should feel free to simplify, if desired.

Program Notes: I wrote most of the lyrics for this piece after an especially reflective day parenting my then 5 and 3 year old children.

That morning I recall spying on them from behind a door, catching them in uninhibited and joy-filled play. A few hours later I witnessed their abject disappointment upon being left out of a game on the local playground. That night at bedtime they peppered me with questions about the nature of God and death. After tucking them in, I turned on the TV and it was filled with the immigration debate and the uncertain future of the DACA bill and the Dreamers. So I penned several thoughts and phrases that would eventually become the basis for Remember the Children.

In fleshing out the text for this choral setting, I knew I wanted to incorporate another language in an effort to better communicate the universal nature of these sentiments–the concern that parents (all people, really) have helping their kiddos navigate a challenging world...and the hopes and dreams we all have for the youngest in our midst. I reached out to Andrea Mwalilino, a Tanzanian pastor in my community, who worked with me to translate the English phrases into Swahili, and I immediately fell in love with several such phrases, most notably "tukumbuke watoto", which means "remember the children."
