III. Credo

V. Agnus Dei

Program Notes Redemption Mass relates to the visions described in Isaiah chapter 6 and Revelation chapter 4.  The opening measures  of the Kyrie depict a person who has just been surprised and humbled by a new understanding of infinity.  The initial  motive, an ascending minor third, forms one of the two intervals upon which the entire composition is constructed.   Sometimes known as the “calling interval,” it represents reaching out to a source of strength and hope and the  simultaneous recognition of a need for redemption.  As the movement progresses, the interval is inverted, filled,  twisted, and stretched, but it ultimately returns to its original configuration for a final request, “Lord have mercy.”  Gloria presents a musical interpretation of the continual activity that fills the heavenly throne room, as described by  Isaiah and the Apostle John.  The lower neighbor tone, a major second, forms the second foundational construct for the  Mass.  Overlapping, swirling rhythms imitate angel wings in flight and voices in praise, growing into a cacophony of  independent but simultaneous worship.   Contrasting sections provide both textual and musical commentary, leading to  a climactic conclusion.  In Isaiah’s vision, one of the seraphim cleanses the prophet’s tongue with hot coals, giving him confidence to proclaim  the message of God despite his own personal shortcomings.  Likewise, Credo is a statement of faith in the power of  redemption.  Beginning with a triumphant fanfare outlined in a cascade of seconds and thirds, this movement explores  the joys, challenges, and excitement of faith in action.  The opening phrase appears regularly in inversion and  fragmentation, representing the various ways in which faith colors and influences one’s life.  Sanctus returns to the scene in Revelation 4, where holy creatures around the throne of God call out repeatedly, “Holy,  holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.”  Textual growth from unison to duet to trio recreates this sacred assembly.  The  contrasting section, characterized by imitation, depicts the coming together of heaven and earth as the theme ascends  and descends.  This idea is built on divided fourths—the result of combining the intervals of a second and third.  Agnus Dei provides both a description and culmination of redemption.  Beginning with Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter  Rücken, the classic poem famously included in Bach’s St. John Passion, we see and hear a weighty metaphor comparing  the stripes on Christ’s back (also referenced in Isaiah 53) to the rainbow given to Noah as a sign of healing, security, and  salvation.  Again, the minor third calls us to “consider” (erwäge) the powerful symbol.  Building on the wall of sound first  presented briefly in Sanctus, the choir sustains a static harmony through a lengthy crescendo, beneath which the  instruments recall themes from previous movements.  These themes represent memories and experiences that lead us  to and through redemption.  Tension breaks into an impassioned description of the “Lamb of God Who takes away the  sins of the world,” contrasted by a solo voice in a plea for mercy.  The Gloria motive returns in augmentation, but this  time amidst overlapping requests for peace.  These calls culminate in a hymn of praise, the traditional Doxology (Old  Hundredth), reharmonized with extended chords built on both seconds and thirds.  This type of sweet dissonance  represents a joyful life that is not devoid of conflict, but that is filled with contentment and rest regardless of  circumstance.        Cover image, Weary Hiker taken by the composer in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, August 26, 2011

Built upon a handful of symbolic musical motives, this piece yearns, grows, and eventually comes to rest transformed and inspired. Fire and Ice (SSATB, a cappella) along with Quibbles and Quirks for wind quintet and Conflictions for brass quintet, began as exercises in counterpoint. Though I didn’t conceive of them as a set, upon further reflection, I see them as having remarkable similarities. All are for five voices, involve imitation, and represent conversations. Fire and Ice, in particular, takes the well-known poem and weaves it into a dialogue—at times an argument—inviting both choir and audience to take sides. Because the text is so familiar, I didn’t concern myself with clarity in its setting, instead focusing on the similar vowel sounds central to key words. This leaves the conclusion up to the audience’s decision, even as late as the final chord, where both fire and ice sound simultaneously. Lacrimas (SATB with mezzo-soprano solo, a cappella) weaves the familiar Psalm text, "They that sow in tears will reap in joy" into a poignant moment from St. Augustine's confessions: "And sending out tears, where I was holding them in, so that they should flow so smoothly, they spread out beneath my heart and it rests on them." Musically, the piece develops in waves that emanate from the opening “sobbing” gesture. The University of Alabama in Huntsville Chamber Choir premiered the work under the direction of Dr. Erin Colwitz-Dehning as part of the Huntsville New Music Festival of 2011. Thomas Moore’s Minstrel Boy (SATB or TTBB with piano) describes an iconic “warrior bard,” committed to defending not only land, but ideals. For him, freedom of thought, speech, and art was more important than his life, and this strong and creative soul preferred death to oppression. While this tune has long been associated with memorials for first responders, I also see it as a call to arms for artists. Join us on the battlefield of ideas with harp and song and voices. O nata lux (SATB, a cappella): On September 12, 2001, members of the University of Tennessee Concert Choir walked into our choir room in a state of shock. Reeling from the previous day’s attacks, none of us really wanted to rehearse, but somehow we knew it was exactly where we needed to be. After warm-ups, we sang Morten Lauridsen’s setting of O nata lux, which we had just begun to learn. Suddenly, the music took on a new meaning and ushered in a memorable hour of sharing, crying, and healing. Something about the line, “for the sake of the lost ones” stuck with me, and over the next several days, I developed my own musical response to both the tragedy and text that had invaded all of our lives. I am humbled by so many beautiful settings of this prayer and in some ways feel ill-equipped to offer yet one more. However, I continue to count it among my favorite compositions. This accessible setting of We Are the Music Makers (SATB and piano) brings O'Shaughnessy's famous text to life through lush harmonies, word painting, and exciting fanfares.
