DWalters
The 2018 Camp Fire was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in Californiaβs history. Over 18,000 buildings were destroyed, 153,000 acres burned, and 85 people lost their lives. Though there are still lessons to be learned and more than enough sorrow to go around, this music is about a particular kind of grief; the loss of placeidentity. Afterall, the βremainsβ of a fire include those left behind. -DW I no longer lived there, but it was still home to me.
The text of Paradise in itβs original form was a YouTube comment on a video of The Choral Scholars of University College Dublin singing The Parting Glass. Following the 2018 fire in Paradise, California, the author and former resident returned to survey the damage. In their online comment, they describe singing The Parting Glass to the ruins of their home as way of apologizing for having to leave.

About the work
I went to visit and walked among the ruins, ash still heavy on the ground and once-familiar blocks [from the original] that held restaurants and taverns, schools and parks, the homes of my friends all echoed empty and lonely on the stark burn-scar. I sang this song, weeping, since it falls unto my lotthat I should rise, and you should not. I begged my home to forgive me for leaving, for surviving, for having to leave it behind.
