Nightscape (2004) was inspired by the cityscape of Rochester, New York from high above, through my open apartment window during the late-night hours of a late-autumn night. This city is a different place by night, a quiet and lonely place that is transformed only by the business day.

The first section of the piece reflects on this vast, expansive space through a series of gently tugging suspensions. Though a lonely place, the multitude of street lamps and traffic signals continue their obligations, and reflect and ricochet their light off the tall, dark buildings - creating a vibrant ambiance, yet a haunting juxtaposition where life and loneliness coexist. The middle section is a thoughtful, but angst ridden melody with contrasting accompaniment. This new section pushes towards a climax of intense emotion and despair, before dissolving into a return to the beginning of the piece - only not quite. Out of the climax, a glassy, ghostly echo of something once familiar emerges - a distant memory from another time. From this ghostly memory, a new melody emerges; a melody that is filled with optimism and hope, which leads and settles on a peaceful closing section. Perhaps, closing in the light, symbolizes the coming of dawn and a return to life in the city as the cycle begins anew.
