About the work Never Weather-beaten Sail (Weary Traveler’s Hymn) is a reimagining of Thomas Campion’s similarly titled seventeenth-century air combined with fragments of the nineteenth-century African-American spiritual Deep River. Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was born in London. Though a physician and lawyer, his fame rests on his poetry and compositions. He is considered the only notable and prolific author among his contemporaries to set their own poetry to music. He composed six volumes of airs as well as several masques. In the second volume of his Two Bookes of Ayres (1613) is his song “Never Weather-beaten Sail.” First mentioned in print in 1867, Deep River is one of the most well-loved of African-American spirituals. However, this status was largely a product of the twentieth century. Late-nineteenthcentury awareness of the spiritual seems minimal and limited to its sporadic inclusion in anthologies of spirituals. Henry T. Burleigh’s choral arrangement of the spiritual in 1913 and its Carnegie Hall debut in 1914 catapulted the spiritual into public awareness and its popularity continues today. In this setting, a traveler is overcome with physical and spiritual weariness. Their body and soul crave rest, and so they cry out. Their cry is both for sustenance and solace, a feast of peace so glorious that their urgency for it is compounded. Though pilgrim tired, they are inspired to both travel toward and wait for their paradise meal and the final satisfaction it brings. Text by Thomas Campion, with the spiritual Deep River, adapted by RK Lord, hear me, hear my cry. I am weary, pilgrim tired. Never more weary, Lord, hear my cry. Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore, Never tired pilgrim’s limbs affected slumber more, Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly from this troubled breast; O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest. Take my soul, Lord, hear my cry. O how I want to go to that Gospel feast where all is peace. Hear, Lord, hear my cry. Ever blooming are the joys of Heav’n’s high paradise. Cold age there deafs not our ears, nor vapor dims our eyes. Glory there the sun outshines, whose beams the blessed only see. O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and raise my sprite to thee. Come quickly, sweetest Lord, and bring your glorious rest. This score is not licensed for performance. Please visit MusicSpoke.com to purchase performance copies.
