W. A. Mozart Text and Concept by
Gunnar Madsen Arranged by
Laurie Betts Hughes

About W. A. Mozart: I wonder how many people miss she sheer genius of Mozart's music because they are not familiar with the music that came before. His music is a contradiction: uniquely balanced yet Dilled with the unexpected, elegant yet often lighthearted, epitomizes the music of the day yet is forward-thinking. And given his highly reDined craftsmanship, I wonder how many people are aware of his penchant for toilet-humor? Though he was a disciplined child prodigy, a devout Catholic, and an industrious adult, the character of Mozart portrayed in this text conveys much of the mischevious impishness of the true Mozart, who composed over 600 pieces including Operas, Symponies, and Piano Sonatas yet also authored sevral naughty songs to sing with his friends at parties. Had he not died prematurely at age 35, what further musical heights would he have acheived?
About the piece, text author, and concept: After getting absolutely sick of the inane music I'd been playing for my young children in the car, I was elated to discover Gunnar Madsen's CD "I'm Growing" featuring this song. They were delighted with this funny song about some naughty kid, and my husband and I were delighted with the enormous improvement of musical quality in our vehicle. It was shortly thereafter that this choral arrangement was born. Gunnar writes, "In my Dirst music theory class in college, the teacher and the students were recalling the silly ways they'd been taught to remember classical melodies when they were young. One of them was for Mozart's 40th symphony (which I'd never heard) which consisted of "Now Mozart's at the window - Let him in, Let him in, Let him in". What an ear-worm! For 25 years now I've dreamt of expanding that ditty into something more substantial, and now I'm proud to present the Dinished piece. I'm really going to get a kick of sending this one to my teacher!" Performance notes: Diction is of the utmost importance in this piece if the audience is going to understand the humor. While the tempo should be reasonable for text delivery, articulations and ornaments should be those appropriate to the Classical Era. For excellent listening, refer to historically informed performances on period instruments, including this Dine performance by The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, under the baton of Jeannette Sorrell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jChn4l-ne9I&index=11&list=PLVt6in7qrfx5gOzBRMtZkucPB7wctEDqL
About the arranger: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds. Though her husband runs and hides on April Fools' Day, she is an avid prankster and he is her favorite target. This score is not licensed for performance.
