About the piece: "Lights of the Western Sky" is a compilation of 3 celestial American folk songs collected by Ruth Crawford Seeger, commissioned and compiled to celebrate the 2017 total solar eclipse visible in Casper, Wyoming. The pieces are connected not only by the folk style and the star subject, but also by tracing the course of a day, and by focusing on the connection of the outer world to the inner soul. I. Bright Morning Stars-- An additive processional on the ultimate theme of children singing. Though the traditional verses state that the fathers are "down in the valley a-prayin''' and the mothers have "gone to heaven a-shoutin'" (or vice versa), the lyrics have been freely adapted in the folk tradition of "floating verses" (adapting lyrics to personal experience) to describe the children's experience. The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man." II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- "Oh, Watch the Stars" and "Great Big Stars," combined in unique ways. The two songs used, "Oh, Watch the Stars" and "Great Big Stars," are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. A fusion of two styles, this movement opens solemnly and culminates in a "hoedown showdown."
Performance Notes: I. Bright Morning Stars: Though the percussion parts may be played by professionals, most, if not all, instruments could be played by well-cued choristers. The solo/soli parts may be sung by one or several soloists, small group, or section--at the director's discretion. The final solo may be highly stylized and/or ornented. The ideal tam tam is a 22in Wuhan Wind Gong, played at the edge. If both movements are performed attacca, the wind chimes, soprano 2, and altos should sustain into the second movement. II. Oh Watch the Stars: The violin/fiddle player should be an instrumentalist comfortable with executing both art song and bluegrass repertoire. The instrumental fills in all bluegrass parts should be highly melodic and idomatic to the bluegrass style. The wind chime could easily be performed by a chorister.
Choral Arrangements of American Folk Songs: In the relatively young United States, this is a timely and relative climate for singing the nation’s folk music considering the multicultural movement in a burgeoning “choral nation.” Choral singing and folk music share much in common to the bene?it of singers, listeners, and the nation’s people in general as it develops its collective song through shared singing. American folk music is a vital resource not only to our children and the people of our nation, but speci?ically for its choristers. It is my fondest wish that choral directors will regularly program quality arrangements of this rich material with their ensembles and add to this body of repertoire. In doing so, may we realize the important work that choral musicians are doing in our home countries. May we further connect our communities separated over history and time, age, and national heritage. In our connecting, may we realize our spiritual and human endeavor that unites us: singing together.
About the arranger: Laurie Betts Hughes (b. 1977) is a spirited conductor of creative connection who fosters community through choral singing; both community within the choir as well as between the choir and the greater community. To this end she composes choral pieces, both commissioned and uncommissioned, and builds choirs of all kinds.
