IMAN’s Song for VOICE AND PIANO

Program Note: Iman’s story is a refugee story, and a story of hope. An Assyrian born in Iraq, she and her family faced abuse and persecution ranging from forced army service to arrest and torture by the secret police. She fled the country in the 1980s and eventually made her way to the north side of Chicago. There she raised talented children and went on to bring the rest of her family from Iraq to safety while helping countless other refugees and immigrants – all because someone met her at the IranIraq border and said “Welcome.” This song was originally commissioned by the Bach & Beethoven Experience for countertenor and baroque instruments as part of a larger work for their “Chicago Stories” project. Performance Note: This song was originally written for a chamber ensemble of early music specialists. To take advantage of their excellent interpretive skills, I deliberately left the music simple and simply notated. Performers should feel free to make it their own. Text: Interview excerpt with Iman Patros Bradosty (edited and condensed)
1986 in November. I was 26, and my brother was two years younger than me. He was serving in the military. We had to send him a telegram, you have to come. So when he came we took off. My brother was in the army, my uncle newly became a war prisoner and my first cousin was killed in the war, he was only 19. After we left, the government came. They inspected our house, they found a letter of my uncle. They took my mom, my sister, my brother and my father to the prison. My father was already like 70 years old, poor baba, and my youngest brother, he was only 15, he was ninth grade when they caught him. My Mom they slapped her so much she can’t hear in one ear. My father, they blindfolded him and said they gonna kill his son in front of your eyes if you don’t tell us wheres your kids. Until he died, every night he wakes up “Don’t kill me, don’t kill me” he screams. So, it took us only 19 hours to make it to Iran. This was November and the North is freezing. We left my town, Ankawa, me and my brother. It was raining and cold out. We paid like $1,500. They are merchants, so we form a caravan. When we made it to the border, the police they shout “Who are you”. We say we are from Iraq but we have two refugees with us. They said “welcome, welcome!” They helped us off the mule, I couldn’t walk, and this guy, God bless him, he was a young man, he was telling me, “You’re brave, you escape and you’re scared from this? You’re gonna do it.” Duration: 10 minutes
