When I Will Run was written, I had just moved to Colorado Springs, a frontier-town-turned-city built underneath the shadow of Pikes Peak. It's a beautiful place with many outdoor trails, and I found one that went along the side of a small river behind my house. One day, as I dodged low-hanging pine branches and tried to keep my feet from slipping as I ran along the rocky path, the first verse of the song came to me--in a very rare moment of what seemed like divine inspiration. I kept running all the way home and transcribed the first verse. From there, the song spun out from itself as I ventured outside again later that day, this time at sunset. I Will Run is about the joyful exhilaration of discovering something new; losing yourself under a wide sky; breathing fresh air; and indulging in nature's freedom and beauty.
