The following words of welcome preceded the premiere of I Am in the spring of 2019 at The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Jacksonville, Florida. They may be of interest. - Bob Moore
Welcome to our performance of my new cantata, I Am. I also welcome you on behalf of
the poet whose words we will be singing, Mr. Richard Leach (who will be enjoying this evening at a later time in Maine where he lives and works).
The first question I will answer is: what is a cantata? The name itself comes from the
Latin cantare, "to sing" and a cantata is simply a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movements, often involving a choir and soloists. Often they are of a sacred nature, but not always. J.S. Bach, a prolific composer of cantatas, wrote a cantata about his love for coffee! Tonight's composition, though, is of a decidedly sacred nature.
So to answer a second question: why I Am? Last spring, during one of our Riverbank
services following Easter Sunday, our associate rector, Fr. Trent Moore preached a sermon about the I AM statements found in the gospel of John. If you have even the most basic familiarity with the New Testament, you know that there are four gospels attributed to four different authors (Matthew, Mark, Luke... and John). The first three are commonly known as the synoptic gospels as they SEE the life of Jesus in a similar manner, and tell it with similar stories in a similar sequence, so much so that Matthew and Luke are thought to have been drawing upon Mark as source material. The gospel of John, however, stands apart, and is described as the SPIRITUAL gospel. One of the major focuses of this gospel is the mystery and the nature of Christ's divinity and his personal union with each believer. And this is where the I AM statements come in: Jesus, through this gospel, reveals in various ways who he is and what he is for us: the bread of life... the light of the world... the gate... the good shepherd... the way... the truth ... the life... the resurrection...the true vine... It's a magnificently written story, no matter what you believe, and for those who DO believe, it is truly a light in the darkness that can never be extinguished.
To continue the story of this piece: as I listened to Fr. Trent, I thought that this would
make an effective piece of music in some extended form or another. Richard and I have a long history, as I have at least a half a dozen published musical settings of his hymn texts, and last

year we collaborated on a setting of the Seven Last Words of Christ, O for a Thousand Tongues (also available from MusicSpoke). I emailed Richard, put this bug in his ear, and a few months later, his poems arrived, each one inspired by these I AM statements, and that set the work in motion. Tonight is the culmination of that work. The expanded orchestration of I Am is available from the composer and includes flute, horn, string quartet and vibes.
