A’ Ghrian
O Iain Mac Nill, coitear, Buiaile nam Bodach, Barraidh
Fàilte ort féin, a ghrian nan tràth, ’S tu siubhal ard nan speur; Do cheumaibh treun air sgéith nan ard, ’S tu màthair àigh nan reul. Thu laighe sìos an cuan na dìth Gun dìobhail is gun sgàth; Thu ’g éirigh suas air stuagh na sìth, Mar rìoghainn òg fo bhlàth.
The Sun
From John MacNeill, cottar, Buiae nam Bodach, Barra [Outer Hebrides, Scotland]
Hail to thee, thou sun of the season, As thou traversest the skies aloft; Thy steps are strong on the wing of the heavens, Thou are the glorious mother of the stars. Thou liest down in the destructive ocean Without impairment and without fear; Thou risest up on the peaceful wave-crest Like a queenly maiden in bloom.
The original Gaelic and the English translation are both drawn from Alexander Carmichael’s Carmina Gadelica, Vol. 3, pp. 310–11. This ode to the sun is secular, though it is also highly reminiscent of allussions to the morning and evening star [long associated with the Virgin Mary (Ave Maris Stella)] and would be appropriate for a wide variety of occasions.
