Notes: John Farmer’s classic madrigal is sweet, romantic, and melodically innocent. What makes this madrigal so fun is the underlying sensuality and humor behind Farmer’s cunning word-painting and text-setting. To bring the text into the 21st century, I decided to reveal another, more sultry side of “Fair Phyllis.” Some nods to Farmer’s composition include the opening solo soprano line, which imitates the original in texture as well as melodic content. The teasing melody for “after her lover” also appears in modern form. My version pays homage to Farmer’s clever setting of the text “up and down he wandered” and then, on the repeat of the text, the elision of “they fell a-kissing… up and down.”
