TEXT (1.) !
Is it the wind of the dawn that I hear in the pine overhead?
(2.) !
No; but the voice of the deep as it hollows the cliffs of the land.
(1.)!
Is there a voice coming up with the voice of the deep from the strand,
!
!
One coming up with a Song in the flush of the glimmering red?
(2.)!
Love that is born of the deep coming up with the sun from the sea.
(1.) !
Love that can shape or can shatter a life till the life shall have fled?
(2.) !
Nay, let us welcome him, Love that can lift up a life from the dead.
(1.) !
Keep him away from the lone little isle. Let us be, let us be.
(2.) !
Nay, let him make it his own, let him reign in it - he, it is he,
!
!
Love that is born of the deep coming up with the sun from the sea.
NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER This piece is a setting of the poem “Duet,” dating from 1884, and written by celebrated, oft-quoted British Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892). Originally appearing in Tennyson’s play Becket, the poem speaks of love through the eyes of two voices or narrators (called ‘voices heard singing among the trees’) and is cloaked in the naturethemed symbolism popular among the Romantic-era authors. The narrators ask from where comes the voice of Love? They declare Love to be so powerful as to shape or shatter a life, but that that we must welcome “him,” as “he” can can lift up a life from the dead. Finally, the birth of Love is compared to the birth of the sun as it appears to rise from the depths of the sea (the deepest feelings of the human). To reflect the theme of Love experienced as a “duet,” I have composed the piece as a series of duets between the voices. Narrator One begins with a two-part soprano and alto, followed by Narrator Two as a two-part tenor and bass. The narrators then join together for SATB settings of various lines. Later, we hear alto-tenor, soprano-bass, soprano-tenor, and alto-bass duets. The final line is presented in a two-part harmony, and set as a canon. The style of the music could be characterized as romantic, melodic, with touches of twentieth-century harmony. There is also an over-arching ‘duet’ occurring between piano and choir, with the pianist making their statement before the final third of the piece, during an eight measure, most romantic setting of the main theme. “Duet” was composed in Taos, New Mexico, at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in 2015. - William V. Malpede ! !
