A Colonial American Mass Shape-note music has been a part of the American musical landscape from the beginning. Its roots are traced through our British and Irish immigrant ancestors, who brought their folks songs, dance music, and hymnody to our shores during the colonial era.

Many of these rustic, often uneducated new Americans could not read, nor write. In order to teach people the rudiments of music and to improve congregational singing, early American composers and musicians, such as William Billings, developed the “singing schools,” utilizing shaped-notes and an ancient, medieval system of music instruction. Many of our greatest American hymns were first published in these forms in hymnbooks such as The Sacred Harp, and Southern Harmony.

I’ve attempted to capture the sound and the spirit of these colonial musicians joined to the timeless words of the Mass in my Melodious Sonnet. The title comes, of course, from the early and beloved hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. While I do not allude to the hymn nor the tune in this Mass, this work is certainly inspired by the hymns that I grew up hearing and singing. My love of William Billings, “fuging” tunes, and the deeply moving sounds of Appalachian folk songs all inform and inspire this piece.

You’ll notice that there are few performance indications, other than tempo suggestions, as is the case in most shape-note music.

This type of music was meant to be communal, and as such, I encourage each ensemble to be creative and approach each movement individually and artistically. Above all enjoy, worship, and sing this music with your hearts tuned to sing God’s praise.
