The Canon of Christmas Canticle One: (Irmos) Christ is born; give ye glory. Christ comes from heaven; meet ye him. Christ is on earth; be ye exalted. O all the earth, sing unto the Lord, and sing praises in gladness, O ye people, for he has been glorified. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Three: (Irmos) To the Son who was begotten of the Father without change before all ages, and in the last times was without seed made flesh of the Virgin, to Christ our God let us cry aloud: Thou hast raised up our horn, holy art thou, O Lord. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Four: (Irmos) Rod of the root of Jesse, and flower that blossomed from his stem, O Christ, thou art sprung from the Virgin. From the mountain overshadowed by the forest thou hast come, made flesh from her that knew not wedlock, O God who art not formed from matter. Glory to thy power, O Lord. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Five: (Irmos) As thou art God of peace and Father of mercies, thou hast sent unto us thine Angel of great counsel granting us peace. So are we guided towards the light of the knowledge of God, and watching by night we glorify thee, O Lover of mankind. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Six: (Irmos) The sea monster spat forth Jonah as it had received him, like a babe from the womb: while the Word, having dwelt in the Virgin and taken flesh, came forth from her yet kept her uncorrupt. For being himself not subject to decay, he preserved his Mother free from harm. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Seven: (Irmos) Scorning the impious decree the children brought up together in godliness feared not the threat of fire, but standing in the midst of the flames they sang: O God of our fathers, blessed art thou. Glory to thee, our God, glory to thee. Canticle Eight: (Irmos) The furnace moist with dew was the image and figure of a wonder past nature. For it burnt not the children whom it had received, even as the fire of the Godhead consumed not the Virgin’s womb into which it had descended. Therefore in praise let us sing: Let the whole creation bless the Lord, and exalt him above all forever. We praise bless and worship the Lord, singing and exalting him throughout all ages. Canticle Nine: (Refrain 1) Magnify, O my soul, her who is greater in honor than the hosts on high. (Irmos) A strange and most wonderful mystery do I see: the cave is heaven; the Virgin the throne of the Cherubim; the manger a room, in which Christ, the God whom nothing can contain is laid. Him do we praise and magnify. (Refrain 2) Magnify, O my soul, God born in the flesh from theVirgin (Refrain 3) Magnify, O my soul, the King born in the cave. (Refrain 4) Magnify, O my soul, God worshipped by the Magi. (Refrain 5) Magnify, O my soul, him who was revealed to the Magi by a star. (Refrain 6) Magnify, O my soul, the pure Virgin who has given birth to Christ the King. (Refrain 7) Magi and shepherds came to worship Christ, born in the city of Bethlehem. (Katavasia) A strange and most wonderful mystery do I see: the cave is heaven; the Virgin the throne of the Cherubim; the manger a room, in which Christ, the God whom nothing can contain is laid. Him do we praise and magnify. —By St. Cosmas the Melodist (8th c.) The Festal Menaion, Trans. Mother Mary & Met. Kallistos (Ware) Copyright © 1969 Mother Mary & Kallistos Ware. Used with permission.

Composer’s Note: The canon is a hymnographic form that developed in Byzantine monasteries during the 8th and 9th centuries. During this period it became the centerpiece of Matins (the morning office) in the Eastern Orthodox churches, and remains so to this day. The form is based on the nine Biblical Canticles*, and would originally have been sung in conjunction with them. Some monasteries still regularly sing the Bibilical Canticles at certain times, especially during Lent. The Second Canticle is traditionally omitted, except on Tuesdays of Lent, because of its intensely penitential character. The full form of a canon is much longer than the present text, and includes a number of verses (troparia)—as many as fourteen in some cases—to be sung or read with each canticle. My composition uses only the irmos of each canticle—a Greek word meaning “link”, because the text of the irmos serves to establish a link between a given Biblical Canticle and the theme being commemorated, in this case the birth of Christ. I adapted the longer form in a way that, I hope, captures the feel of a canon as it might be sung during a festal All-Night Vigil in an Orthodox monastery, but is still suitable for a concert setting. Musically, my hope is to create something like an “American Chant.” As traditional chants for the canon tend to do, my music follows the rhythm of the text closely, and has very little in the way of texture changes or added expressive elements. The words are, as it were, the dish, and the music is the platter. That being said, the music is carefully constructed to present something of the dynamism and just-barely-restrained joy that is typical of Orthodox festal services. The melodic and textural simplicity conceals a rhythmic liveliness and intricacy. My hope also was to make the music sound neither new nor old—or perhaps both—but rather timeless, and yet deeply connected to the sound of the English language and the spirit of the best American singing. Canons are traditionally sung by two antiphonal choirs, and this piece likewise is designed to split the women’s parts and men’s parts into two choirs. In a concert setting it works particularly well to actually put the sopranos and altos on one side of the stage and the tenors and basses on the other, with both groups singing together on the refrains. In the final section, the katavasia—literally, “going down,” because at this point the two choirs standing on either side of a monastic church would go down to the middle and stand together—the two choirs should sing together, and might even move together into the middle of the stage. —Benedict Sheehan January 14, 2019
