Love! sweet Love! was thought a crime. … from ‘A Little Girl Lost’ by William Blake

Program Note: Blake’s Ode: A Love Song is a setting of the first stanza of William Blake’s ‘A Little Girl Lost’, from Songs of Experience. The piece was written for and commissioned by Lauren Buckley and the Hollywood Master Chorale in early 2013 as part of the ‘Voices of LA’ project.

In choosing to set this small portion of Blake’s original poem, I wanted to explore that, within the short text, there was a sense of past, present, and future. The words also resonated with me on a deeper level: It is too true even today that, for some, ‘Love! sweet Love! [is] thought a crime’. Ultimately, the piece is a love song, looking towards the future with optimism.
