As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds and these, if vigorous, branch out and overtop many a feebler branch. So it has been with the great Tree of Life which fills with its dead and broken branches the crust of the earth and covers the surface with its ever branching and beautiful ramifications. — from On the Origin of Species (1859), Chapter 4: Natural Selection
The Berlin Specimen of Archaeopteryx (pictured on the cover) is the most complete example of its genus in existence. I chose it for two reasons: firstly it illustrates a key moment not only in the evolution of birds, but in our understanding of evolution itself — it is a bud, branching out; secondly, this music (as part of Missa Charles Darwin, from which is it excerpted) was performed mere feet away from the Archaeopteryx display in Berlin’s Museum für Naturkunde on March 22, 2013. The music was created in 2011 for New York Polyphony, a quartet of male singers (ATBB), adapted first for the London Concord Singers under Malcom Cottle (2013), then reworked for The Esoterics under Eric Banks (2018). This version is presented in the friendlier key of G major, though it may be performed down a semi-tone if desired.
