Program Notes My mom insisted for many years that my two sisters and I share a room, even though we had enough rooms for us each to have our own. When she decided to let us move into different rooms, I had two options, one of which was the guest room, which had a bigger closet and its own bathroom. The other option was (and is) always the coldest, has a much smaller closet, and was mostly used for storage, and thus full of our childhood toys and clothes. But the second room had windows, which faced the lake. My poem reflects the choice I made. --FM "8 Ways to Look at a Window" was written by Francesca Myhrvold, and chosen as a finalist in the 2014 River of Words youth poetry competition. The poem's eight sections are shown as eight mini movements in the composition, each with its own style and characteristics. From the plaintive protest of "you'll be cold at night", to the glimmering "pinpricks of light"; the cruetly of the "locked door" and the celebration of the "first thing" upon waking, a wide array of text painting techniques and musical moods complement the variety in the text, and tell the story arc of the narrator's journey to acceptance for the new living space. --MH

Performance Notes "8 Ways to Look at a Window", for SSAA treble chorus, is a piece comprised of eight short movements, each of which reflects its own personality. To emphasize this distinction, there should be a moderately long pause (at least three to five seconds) before the start of each movement to reset the feel. The overall tone of the piece should be fairly conversational throughout, with discretionary use of rubato when appropriate. The end of each movement should feel "finished", holding the final note as a fermata unless otherwise specified by a rest or mark of articulation. The solo in movement 1, "You'll be cold at night", may be sung by a single singer or by a small group of no more than five singers within the section. The tone of the solo should be straight, pure, and childlike (as a boy soprano would sound). Care should be taken throughout the whole piece to avoid significant amounts of vibrato, to maintain the childlike quality throughout the duration of the piece. The piece should ideally be performed seamlessly without the interruption of applause or giving the choir a starting pitch for each movement. About the Composer Marjorie Halloran, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, is a composer, singer, and songwriter. She is the co-founder of the choral workshop program for composition students at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, VT, where she received her MFA in composition with an emphasis in songwriting. Marjorie has studied with Michael Early, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Don DiNicola, Abbie Betinis, and Alice Parker. Marjorie's compositions have been performed by Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble; Schola Cantorum of Los Altos, CA; Resounding Achord of San Jose, CA; WomenSing of Orinda, CA, and multiple ensembles at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has arranged for Homestead High School, Los Altos United Methodist Church, and Willow Glen United Methodist Church, among others. She is the winner of the 2015-16 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, and this piece ("8 Ways to Look at a Window") was premiered in June 2016. She was also a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, and a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018. An accomplished choral singer in addition to composer, Marjorie has performed with many different ensembles in the Bay Area, as well as in Princeton, New York City, and the University of California at Davis, where she received her BA in music theory/composition. She currently sings with Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble of Austin, TX.
