2010- 2011

Welcome to The Music Hall’s 2010-2011 Season! Season standouts include jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, kids rocker Dan Zanes, Comedy Central Star Juston McKinney’s new A Merry Funny New England Christmas, 12 opera broadcasts from Lincoln Center, and Momix Dance’s Botanica. Our passionate, dedicated curators are committed to bringing the world to Portsmouth. We’ve searched the globe for the talent you’ll see on stage and screen this year, whether it’s Buika, the Afro-Soul Flamenco Queen, or Margaret Atwood, the iconic Canadian novelist. We are proud to be part of what makes Portsmouth and the entire Seacoast region so forward looking. I’m thrilled to think of all the nights, afternoons and evenings we’ll all spend among friends here. This is a great place to mark that special occasion. With all the fun and thrill of a live show, with great drinks and snacks, our historic theater is the place to celebrate!

The Music Hall Experience

The nonprofit 130+ year old hall, the oldest in New Hampshire, provides a unique experience for patrons – North Shore Magazine says it best,“Featuring a mix of musical artists, award-winning films, and theatrical performances every night of the week, The Music Hall operates as the city’s cultural epicenter. Upon entering the Victorian theater, you’d never guess it was built in 1878. Ongoing renovations are responsible for the swanky Founders Lobby Lounge beneath the theatre, where you can comfortably sip a cocktail before the show.” The wind is in our sails. Over the last several years we’ve seen tremendous growth in The Music Hall’s audiences and supporters – membership is at record levels, live events keep selling out, and corporate sponsorship is also at an all-time high. More than just a cultural anchor, The Music Hall is being called a regional Lincoln Center. Already our newest project, the Loft, a Center for Performing Arts and Education, is being heralded for all it will do and bring to the Seacoast community and particularly Portsmouth, the arts and cultural capital of the region. If you want to find out what you can do to help The Music Hall, the first step is keeping our membership strong, so join or renew today (page 9,11). If you want to sponsor The Music Hall, see page 13. If you’re interested in our Treasure the Future Campaign (page 124-125) please contact the Development office. And finally, I love talking to you, getting your ideas, hearing your support, sharing our stories together. See you at The Music Hall and coming in spring, The Music Hall Loft! Best, Patricia Lynch, Executive Director

Welcome to The Music Hall On behalf of all of us on the Board of Trustees, I want to welcome you to The Music Hall. What’s in store for this season is truly remarkable – today’s best performers and award-winning talent in music, theater, opera, dance, cinema and literary arts. Beyond the many events taking place on our stage, and in partnership with organizations throughout the community, we have exciting news to share…. By the end of the 2010-2011 season, The Music Hall will have opened a new space just around the corner from the historic theater, a Center for Performing Arts and Education at 131 Congress Street called simply the Loft. The re-purposing of this downtown storefront is being funded by our capital campaign currently underway, Treasure the Future (see pages 122-123). No longer will our highly valued master classes, meet-the-artist gatherings, panels and discussion groups have to be held in make-shift spaces or far off-site. This new space, so badly needed for our programs and offices, will allow The Music Hall to better fulfill its mission of community service. Through this once-in-a-generation capital campaign we are also making great strides toward building an endowment. The lack of an endowment jeopardizes the long-term stability of The Music Hall. These funds are critical to: • supporting the maintenance of the historic building now beautifully restored in many areas; • building community capacity to support high-impact educational programs, and; • continuing and extending The Music Hall’s many partnerships with other nonprofits.

   

With no endowment, the future of the historic theater as we know it is at stake. Already with the establishment of our Legacy Society, we’ve raised $2 million toward our endowment funds. Our goal is to raise up to an additional $3 million. There is so much to love about this wonderful region we live in – the people, the opportunity, the new downtown businesses, restaurants, and renewed energy that comes to a city with a restored and dynamic arts center operating at its crossroads. We thank you for being part of that energy and supporting The Music Hall through your personal membership and/or corporate sponsorship. In this year of unprecedented growth, we will be asking members and friends near and far to engage more fully with The Music Hall and support its mission through donations to the Treasure the Future campaign. We will be hosting a series of events ranging from backstage tours to special concerts, meet-the-artist events to community open houses to introduce you to the campaign and its projects. We hope that, when asked, you’ll step forward to learn more and join us on our journey. Through your generosity we can keep this historic theater operating for generations to come. Thank you and enjoy the show! Mike Harvell President, Board of Trustees

My Martin’s Point doctor and diabetes educator eased my mind and gave me the information I needed to take care of myself. Treasure The Future Capital Campaign

Treasure The Future Capital Campaign “Usual calculus means 1+1 equals 2, but in the case of The Music Hall and places like it in the creative world, 1+1 can equal 3... the whole is more than that sum of parts….. I’m so happy to be caught up in your whirlwind.”

– Ken Burns, filmmaker, Honorary Co-Chair, Treasure the Future Campaign Why undertake such a large project? The work accomplished through Treasure The Future will profoundly and positively impact the community. The Music Hall today is not only the region’s cultural anchor, but a powerful economic driver contributing $5.5 million yearly to the local economy. Community and civic leaders recognize the power of The Music Hall not only to increase the quality of life for all residents, but to draw visitors from throughout the region.

The Music Hall recently announced a major Capital Campaign, Treasure the Future, which will transform the historic theater into a performing arts center for the 21st Century. The $13.5 million campaign isThe Music Hall’s largest ever community project and represents a oncein-a-generation opportunity for the arts organization to advance its mission to present the very best of diverse performing and related arts at The Music Hall as an active and vital arts center for the enrichment of the Seacoast community. Through Treasure the Future, The Music Hall will: • Repair and restore the 130-year-old historic theater, completing critical upgrades to its backstage grid and technology systems and the long-awaited last steps in restoration to its 1878 and 1901 Victorian grandeur including the upper lobby and chandelier; • Extend its reach and impact in the community by expanding into an adjacent, recycled space at 131 Congress Street, to be called The Center for Performing Arts & Education or the Loft; and

Upon the completion of these comprehensive projects, The Music Hall will serve as an engine for growth into the next century. The funds will secure the legacy of this historic building and its community programs, and further stimulate the creative economy of this fast-growing region of New England. What can I do to help? The Music Hall has made significant progress to meet its campaign target of $13.5 million - your participation is critical to the success of the campaign. For more information or to make a gift to Treasure the Future, please contact Laura Smith, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 603-433-3100 x40.

THE LOFT In Spring 2011The Music Hall will open the Loft, a Center for Performing Arts

and Education, featuring a small theater/studio classroom allowing for exciting new programming, literary and educational initiatives in the growing Masters in Learning program. A dynamic, flexible space, the Loft will leverage existing resources of The Music Hall and expand opportunities for community involvement and advancement as well as provide office space for The Music Hall’s staff. Highly visible on Congress Street, the Loft will be unique to Portsmouth, providing its patrons educational and entertainment experiences usually experienced in larger urban areas and enhancing the quality of life in the region.

“We value The Music Hall because we understand the importance of the arts and culture in this community… Portsmouth is built on arts and culture. The Music Hall is an invaluable resource .”

“For my business and many others downtown, The Music Hall has been a key factor for success.… Now, it’s lift-off time. The Loft will bring new attention to all The Music Hall offers. It’s a wonderful re-use of downtown space that will clearly transform Congress Street and have a powerful impact on our downtown and regional economy, broadening The Music Hall’s and Portsmouth’s visibility in the tri-state area. ”
