Holiday Magic with Mary Poppins!

When the holidays come, there’s a part of all of us come that yearns to be in the landscape of memory—white snow, ice-skaters, rich decorations, and eye-popping wonders. Well, from December 10-14 at the beautiful historic Music Hall, these nostalgic delights are close at hand with one of the great classic characters of all time: get ready for a Jolly Holiday with Mary. The Ogunquit Playhouse production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, the Broadway musical will dazzle audiences of all ages with a cast of more than twenty; high flying, lavish sets; and a live orchestra. The production of great singer-dancers and actors features top talent from Broadway and from international and national tours. Sharing is what this season is all about and this is the perfect opportunity for you to share an unforgettable experience with family and friends. When you plan your day with Mary, you’ll want to check out the whole Portsmouth downtown all dressed up with lights and greenery. Stop by Strawbery Banke for some Puddle Dock ice-skating (what could be more perfect!); grab some tea and treats or an early dinner; and then head for the show. The musical numbers will dance in your head long after the red velvet curtain comes down, as will the memories you create. The messages of family love, of money not being everything, and of the importance of magic in our lives will ring like a bell for all who see this magnificent production. I know I’ll be taking my own family and some young friends as well — we’ve got some special holiday surprises in store for all. See you at the show!

Star-Studded November Writers: Fun Facts

The two best-selling fiction writers coming to Writers on a New England Stage this month—Anne Rice on November 4, and Janet Evanovich on November 20—have very different writing styles. Anne’s writing is lushly descriptive, and Janet pens a spare, modern prose. What they have in common is the craft of creating a compelling sense of place, a narrative of suspense that keeps us reading, and interesting characters who we hate to say goodbye to when the novel ends. We can’t wait to get inside the heads of these prolific and hugely popular writers, and revisit some of their memorable characters! For fans and new readers alike, here’s some intelligence on Anne Rice and Janet Evanovich to whet your whistle before their appearances:

ANNE RICE...

• has written more than 30 novels since penning her first, Interview With the Vampire, in 1976, which became one of the bestselling novels of all time.

• describes her new book, Prince Lestat, as modern-day sequel to all her previous Vampire Chronicle novels, exploring “the problems the vampires face today, as a tribe drawn together, almost inadvertently, by the actions and behavior of Lestat.”

• On writing: “my advice is the same to all. If you want to be a writer, write. Write and write and write. . . ignore rules.”

JANET EVANOVICH...

• spent a lot of time in “LaLa Land” as a child, which she describes as “an out-of-body experience -- while your mouth is eating lunch your mind is conversing with Captain Kirk.”

• teams up FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare with charming con man Nicolas Fox in her hotly anticipated new novel, The Job. Their mission? To bring down one of the world’s most wanted and untouchable felons: the brutal leader of a global drug-smuggling empire.

• On writing: “If being a writer is important to you, keep at it, keep improving, and don’t give up. I wrote three books that were never published.”
