OUR COMMUNITY

Member Spotlight:

The McElroys

This month, we chatted with Vanessa McElroy, a Music Hall member at the Supporter level as well as a homeowner for a featured home on this year’s 27th Annual Kitchen Tour. Don't miss this year's tour on Sat., May 12, see how local turn-of-the century abodes have been renovated to showcase dream kitchens of all shapes and sizes.

Q: What drew you to become a Music Hall Member?

A: We feel lucky to live in such a vibrant arts area and want to support that aspect of Portsmouth and the seacoast region. The Music Hall is such a historic and unique arts center that helps to make Portsmouth a rich cultural community.

MEMBERS ENJOY:

CONVENIENCE! Sign up for our convenient Annual Auto Renewal program and never miss a beat! To enroll, check the box on your membership renewal form or contact Alexis at 603.766.2176

Q: You have a beautiful kitchen. As a featured home on this year's Kitchen Tour, what was your design inspiration? What is your favorite design aspect about your kitchen?

A: I love the color and the center island. It's an open space for entertaining but it's a practical and functional space for us as well. We wanted to create a space where our family could feel comfortable and spend time together that was kid-friendly. It's the room that we spend the most time in and we wanted it to be warm and inviting - for us as well as guests.

Q: What has been your favorite show so far at the theater, and is there anyone coming up that you’re particularly looking forward to seeing?

A: Our whole family loved White Christmas! We're looking forward to making it an annual tradition! I was also excited to attend Shelter: A One Billion Rising Event in February to benefit Haven, a local non profit that I support. There are so many upcoming shows that I'm looking forward to... hearing Katy Tur (Writers on a New England Stage) in April, Amy Black: The Music of Memphis & Muscle Shoals, and the Black Lillies coming in June.

Q: What are some of the “unexpected benefits” you’ve enjoyed from being a Music Hall member and what would you tell others who are considering joining?

A: What we appreciate most as members, is that the Music Hall events are something that our entire family can enjoy together and there is a variety of events to see, from live music shows to movies to opera to the Writers in the Loft series. There is always something new and interesting that's being offered.

Curator's Corner

From the Unbelievable to the Shockingly Real MARGARET TALCOTT, Literary Series Producer

Not in my 10+ years’ producing our literary series alongside Patricia Lynch have I launched such an exciting and varied series of spring of events - truly, an embarrassment of riches! We feel very lucky to have such distinct voices, masterful minds, and brilliant insight coming our way...

Saddle up for C.J. Box on April 6 and ride along with everyone’s favorite Wyoming game warden in The Disappeared. Don’t miss the remarkable NBC correspondent Katy Tur (on the cover) visiting Writers on a New England Stage on Sunday, April 8 with her book Unbelievable about being on the campaign trail with Donald Trump. She and Virginia Prescott, from series copresenter NH Public Radio, should have a great conversation!

Next we celebrate May Day with experts from the New England Wild Flower Society, learning about Native Plants For New England Gardens. And on Wed., May 9, Pulitzer Prize-winner Richard Russo joins us to share insight into his life as a writer, teacher, friend, and reader - all from his first collection of essays, The Destiny Thief. What a treat! We’ll close the month laughing with “Judge” John Hodgman as he rambles, with mixed emotions, through Vacationland.

Finally, for June, Patricia and I brought home these “goodies” from our yearly NYC industry meetings: talk-of-the-town bestselling novelist Celeste Ng (Little Fires Everywhere), in discussion with writer Joe Hill (The Fireman) on June 7; and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Egan, coming to the Historic Theater on Tue., June 26 with her bestselling kaleidoscopic history, Manhattan Beach. Do join us!

Catching Up with Kim Richey

Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming and Performing Arts Curator, spoke with artist Kim Richey, who’s coming to the Loft on Sun., April 15, to talk about life, music, and songwriting. Read the full interview at TheMusicHall.org.

Q: What role did music play in your life up until your first record deal at the age of 37?

A: I have always loved singing. I sang in choirs in church when I was young and all throughout school. I never had the opportunity to play music professionally until I moved to Nashville in 1988, when my close university friend Bill Lloyd, who was in the duo Foster and Lloyd then, talked me into it.

Q: Can you describe your songwriting process? Do you co-write?

A: I think of myself mostly as a singer. I write to have something to sing and to express myself when I am unable to in any other way. Usually, I start with a musical idea. I love collaborating with other songwriters. It makes me look at things a little differently than I would on my own and end up some place I might not have found by myself.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

The best way to spread Christmas Cheer

One performance of White Christmas was even more magical than the rest: when Jim Jalbert, President of C&J Bus Lines, announced from the stage that his company would renew their support as Presenting Sponsor of the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall series. The news brought down the house.

And now we’re excited for Jim and C&J to share more news: the 2018 winter production will be Elf the Musical. Elf is the story of Buddy, a human raised by elves at the North Pole, who must journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. C&J knows a thing or two about traveling to NYC. The company has been connecting the Seacoast area to the Big Apple since 2011. Offering executive class service and daily trips from Dover, NH; Portsmouth, NH; Tewksbury, MA and seasonal service from Ogunquit to New York, C&J is in the business of connecting Broadway to the Seacoast.

THIS MONTH'S MEMBER EVENTS

This is an extra special year for C&J as the company celebrates their 50th anniversary. In addition to their service to NYC, C&J has become a regional icon, providing hourly transportation from Seacoast New Hampshire and Newburyport, MA, to Boston’s South Station and Logan Airport.

In preparation for the show, plan a Buddy-inspired weekend in Manhattan! A word of advice: while Buddy’s walking route through the Holland Tunnel is dramatic, it’s also illegal. We recommend taking a C&J Bus instead! To learn more about C&J Bus Lines, please visit RideCJ.com.
