In the summer of 1968, ABC was dead last in the ratings and hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley, Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. A Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, Gore Vidal was a leftist novelist and polemicist. It was unlike anything TV had ever broadcast, and all the more shocking because it was live and unscripted.

Fill the Hall is a collaboration between Seacoast Family Food Pantry and The Music Hall.
The Music Hall is fortunate enough to be located in a community that believes in and is able to nurture the Arts. Even here in Portsmouth, there are children who go without food. We believe that the greatest impact we can have is to give to those in need. That is why we are proud to partner with Seacoast Family Food Pantry to Fill the Hall with food, not just music.
Please, stop by the theater on Saturday, August 1 from 9am –5pm and bring nonperishable food items or a monetary donation. The concept is to pack every single seat in the theater with a box or bag of food. Everything collected will be distributed by Seacoast Family Food Pantry.
More information available at TheMusicHall.org.

Portsmouth becomes a lively, genrebending music mecca from August 14 - 16, when a diverse crowd comes together to perform, collaborate, and listen during the annual PARMA Music Festival. It culminates on Sunday, August 16 at the Main Event in The Music Hall Historic Theater, featuring a variety of local and regional acts from headliner indie rockers Kingsley Flood to The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra.

Director/playwright/performer Kent Stephens has staged over 200 productions in the American regional theatre and off-Broadway. He is the founder of STAGE FORCE, a professional theatre offering full productions in Kittery, Maine, and a play reading series in The Music Hall Loft. Kent served as head of the B.A. program in Theatre Arts at the University of Minnesota, and has taught acting or served as guest artist at Cornell University, Emerson College, and Carleton College. By Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator

Despite a relentless touring schedule that began back in April 2014, Joan Armatrading took time out to talk to us about music, songwriting, and her love for American audiences in a career spanning four decades. We can’t wait to welcome her back to The Music Hall stage on Thu., September 24 for a very special solo acoustic evening, on what has been billed as her last major world tour.
Thérèse LaGamma: When did you start playing music?
Joan Armatrading: I’ve been playing music since I was 14. I’m self-taught. I learned to play by ear—not so much by listening to records as by hearing the music all around me. I’m more into live music than records. But I’m always listening to music and trying to get better.
TL: What was the soundtrack of your childhood?
JA: When I was a girl, I was influenced by many musicians but was not one to sit for long stretches and listen to music. I think Joni Mitchell is brilliant—the Blue Album, which we all know, is an absolute classic and just the best. But it wasn’t what made me want to write music.
TL: Is this how you define your own music, as writing from feeling?
JA: Yes. I write from how I feel, from observation, and generally from looking at something real. Of course, I write about myself as well. Songs tend to tell you what they want to be. I can see all the emotions, from happiness to anger, and use my songs to communicate those emotions.
TL: I’ve read that you particularly like American audiences. Why is that?
JA: The enthusiasm of American audiences is very enjoyable. When they like a song, you know it— you don’t have to wait until the end of the show. They know and love the songs, and they get involved. It’s great for me to get that instant feedback.
TL: What can your fans expect to hear at your Music Hall performance, which is part of your last major world tour?
JA: I will be playing songs from many different albums, up to my most recent release in 2012. The very first number, City Girl, is from my 1972 album. I’ll be playing solo and on instruments that include a piano, 12 string guitar, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. Yes, this will be my last tour on such a big scale—after it ends in late November, I don’t want to be on the road nonstop.

SAT., NOVEMBER 14 6:30 PM
Join Music Hall historian Zhana Morris every other Tuesday at 5:30 for a one-hour tour through the Historic Theater. Hear the back-stories of our American Treasure, from its connection to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (including how it inspired an Indigo Girls song), to the role The Music Hall played in helping families manage under strict food rationing during WWII. You’ll get an upfront look at the restorations and renovations that allow our 1878 theater to thrive well into the digital age without losing its historic charm.
Tours this month start on August 11, running bi-weekly through September 8.
