From the President of the Board Dear Patrons: Since you are reading this as you wait for the performance, you’ve already entered through our gracious Founders Lobby – a new Great Room for the Seacoast. We’re thrilled to have met our goals of providing you with the single biggest upgrade in services in the Hall’s 130-year history, to become as “green” as possible, and to reflect the Beaux Arts design and history of our grand Victorian theater. As Doug Nelson, Music Hall Board Member and Chair of the Facilities & Restoration Committee, said, “We’ve moved the building far forward in time, bringing 21st century amenities to this important public space.”

This renovation helped us take a critical step in strengthening and advancing our impact as an arts and education center for the broadest community. Our programming continues to bring in artists at the top of their game – our season boasts three Tony Award winning plays, Grammy Award winners in concert, Parents Gold Choice Award winners, Portsmouth premieres and the return of Music Hall favorites. And, we’re thrilled to feature the sophomore season of our newest signature series, The Met @ The Music Hall, which joins Writers on a New England Stage, Intimately Yours, KidsRULE! and the granddaddy of our signature programs, Telluride by the Sea. Our commitment to children has never been greater - each year 20,000 children visit the Hall for on and off stage programming. Education @ The Music Hall continues with the 14th Annual School Days Series, offering affordable (still $5!) high caliber matinees to 80 Seacoast schools, homeschoolers and families, while Masters in Learning provides master classes and “meet the master” opportunities.

Our Community Partners Program welcomes area nonprofits and core tenants such as Ballet New England, New Hampshire Film Festival and Granite State Opera.

Our economic impact is just as significant. We pump $5 million annually into our local economy in the form of show related spending. That’s the impact you create when you visit and shop and dine prior to the show.

Thanks for your support in helping to make us, as Yankee Magazine said, “one of the premier venues on the New England seaboard…a mandatory destination.” We need you more than ever as we bring The Music Hall into the 21st century while maintaining and improving the treasure for generations to come. It’s true – we bring the world to Portsmouth! I think you’ll agree, if you haven’t been to The Music Hall lately, you haven’t been!

It’s clear – you and I are all part of a wonderful community. The Music Hall – and everyone who participates in the Hall – does a terrific job knitting that community together day in and day out. Is there anything more important than community?

How do we do that? By gathering people together for conversation, for entertainment, for education. By keeping our focus on the children of our community. By offering great on and off stage programming for children and adults and families.

The mission of The Music Hall is to present the very best of diverse performing and related arts at The Music Hall as an active and vital arts center for the enrichment of the Seacoast community.

Our vision is to be the Seacoast’s premier performing arts center fulfilling our role as the anchor cultural organization in our community and to emerge as an American Treasure through a combination of vibrant programming and a dynamic, respectful restoration that is historically valid while balancing contemporary needs. As a highly focused performing arts center we will enliven our community with a diverse array of performance genres and an outlook that is contemporary, inclusive and classic. Welcome to our new Founders Lobby – the latest restoration and renovation work completed in the 1878 historic hall. This is our first season in this remarkable 2,600 square foot space, and we are thrilled patrons can now experience the expanded amenities, and enjoy the history and beauty of this Beaux Arts “...the structure lobby for the 21st century.

Working from our strategic plan, we embarked on renovating our cramped, cold, and inadequate lobby in October of 2006. We’ve succeeded in our many goals including becoming as ‘green’ as possible - increasing energy efficiency to 96% - within the building’s antique footprint.

With this new lobby we look back…and we look forward. The new gathering area is named after the Founders, the early friends of The Music Hall who saved the historic theater from destruction in 1987, and brought it life as an arts center vital to the community.

After the U.S. Senate named The Music Hall an “American Treasure” in 2003 we accomplished great things by taking small steps. We hung a new red curtain and fixed the roof and stairs. Two years ago we revealed the stunning and previously hidden cherubed proscenium arch from 1901. Last year we completed the faithful restoration of the 1878 decorative paintings on the ceiling dome.

Architectural conservators have called the restoration “so dramatic, it takes your breath away.” In a full feature on the theater and its history, The New York Times celebrated the “majestic Music Hall…much of the Beaux Arts interior design is restored and the structure is returned to its Victorian-era glory…Gods and cherubs have reappeared.” When we received the 2008 Preservation Award from the NH Preservation Alliance for our comprehensive work, we were understandably proud.

With this year’s renovation of the lobby and plans for future work, we hope to secure the legacy of this historic building and its community programs, further stimulate the creative culture and economy of this fast-growing region, and strengthen and advance The Music Hall, an American Treasure for the Arts and a cultural anchor for New England.

Historical Tours: To learn more about the history of The Music Hall and its remarkable restoration, join us on a guided tour behind the scenes, at 5pm on the first Wednesday of the month and at 12:30pm on the third Thursday. The Journey Continues The Music Hall is committed to its transformation into a performing arts center for the 21st century.

Future projects include: • the full restoration and enhancement of this historic hall, including backstage systems • the further development of educational offerings for the benefit of the broadest community • the establishment of an endowment to maintain and advance this American Treasure Because of our antique equipment backstage, shows are mounted and presented at four times the effort and physical strain than at more modernized theaters.

The hand-operated rigging system was built by sailors more than 100 years ago no major upgrades have been undertaken since.

The Music Hall is the 14th oldest operating theater in U.S., older than any in New Hampshire, Maine or Massachusetts. It’s one of the last “hemp” houses.

As the theater is modernized, its history must be preserved – except perhaps for the garbage can chandelier put in place decades ago!
