There will also be Great Art On Screen: Frida - Viva La Vida highlighting the life and works of Frida Kahlo on March 24. But why stop at film, opera, theatre, and visual art when we can also bring the finest in dance to our screens!? The Music Hall is fortunate to have a circle of friends who have pledged their support in the form of planned or legacy gifts that will fund our activities for years to come. To recognize their interest in ensuring our continued vitality and relevance, we created the 1878 Legacy Society, named for the year our storied Hall was built. Jude Blake, an active philanthropist on the Seacoast and a member of the 1878 Legacy Society, shared her thoughts on planned giving.
Why did you become involved with The Music Hall and what motivated you to build a lasting legacy?

When I moved to Portsmouth about 12 years ago, I looked to get involved with and support local organizations that made my new community vibrant and strong. The Music Hall impressed me with their solid leadership and great programming for kids, families, and music lovers and I immediately fell in love with the Theater for the wide variety of shows and educational experiences it provides. The Music Hall, meaning its members, volunteers, and staff, became like a family to me. When I walk through those doors, I am never alone; it is a friendly and welcoming place. By spending time at The Music Hall, I broadened my own knowledge of so many things that make life here interesting and exciting. I then learned about the positive financial impact that The Music Hall has on the greater Seacoast area. Leaving a bequest will ensure that The Music Hall has the resources to support important strategic initiatives that will enable it to contribute to this thriving community for years to come.
What are some of the ways people can support the organization via a planned gift, and what was your experience?
There are many ways to leave a planned gift. The Music Hall can be a named beneficiary of an IRA or a Life Insurance policy. Or it can be named in a will or an estate trust. My dear friend, Harry Schult so loved The Music Hall that he named them the recipient of his IRA. Harry’s gift provided the funds needed to purchase the current ticketing and customer management system that we all benefit from today. Through Harry, I personally experienced the positive impact that a legacy gift can have on a deserving organization.
Can you describe the advantages of making a planned gift now, and why others should consider this vehicle as a way to support the theater?
A planned gift will benefit the theater for years in the future. Annual funding is important for supporting the current operational needs of The Music Hall. But a bequest can be the funds for important initiatives that will keep the Hall and this community brightly lit for the next generation of theater lovers. It is easy to do and it sure feels good!
If you have included The Music Hall in your will or estate plans, please let us know. We would like to thank you for your generosity, make sure the purpose of your gift is understood by the theater, and recognize you as a member of the 1878 Legacy Society. For more information please contact Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 603.766.2174 or GCarolan@themusichall.org.

The Ar T s A re T he A nswer to vibrant and prosperous communities where we treasure our heritage, celebrate our diversity and nurture our ingenuity.

Join us in welcoming Jim Schachter, the new president and CEO of New Hampshire Public Radio. We sat down with Jim to talk about journalism, Writers on a New England Stage, and our partnership with NHPR.
What drew you to the role at New Hampshire Public Radio?
At The Music Hall, there is no gift greater than giving to others. The community around us is so important and outreach programs like Give the Gift of Magic provide an opportunity to give back. Our fourth year of Give the Gift of Magic was a terrific success! We are so thankful for inspiration and underwriting by Morgan and Tara Rutman, help from our Community Partners, support from friends and sponsors including Hampton Ford Hyundai, and also the generosity of our patrons! All these elements came together again to help The Music Hall extend a helping hand to local individuals, groups and whole families in need by gifting tickets to those who may not have otherwise been able to see the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall production of Annie. Each year, this is truly a community effort for all involved and benefits those right in our own neighborhoods. What a heartwarming end to the holidays!
This year, we were able to give out over 650 vouchers for free tickets—an increase of more than 100 over last year! Our partners Haven, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Arts in Reach, Families First, Goodwin Community Health, Easterseals, and Cross Roads House once again helped us tremendously by getting those tickets into the hands of community members in need, including families, veterans, and senior citizens. Give the Gift has grown exponentially over the years, and we are overflowing with gratitude for all of the support. We are striving to help even more people this coming holiday season and can't wait to get started.
Thank you to our Corporate Partners

As a news organization with statewide reach, New Hampshire Public Radio is uniquely positioned to use journalism to spark conversations, empower decision making, and help illuminate the issues that concern our friends and neighbors here in the Granite State. People are looking for information these days, but also looking for inspiration and hope. NHPR’s work can provide all of that—and we can set a hopeful example as an ambitious, entrepreneurial organization filled with people who care deeply about the state. Working with partners in New Hampshire and beyond, we want to build on the affection and respect that NHPR draws to strengthen the foundation of financial and community support that allows us to continue our award-winning work long into the future.
What about moving to New Hampshire was the most exciting?
You never lose your curiosity as a journalist. So for me, the chance to explore a new place from the ground up is really invigorating. And we’ve arrived in New Hampshire at such a fascinating time, what with the first-in-the-nation presidential primary, a statehouse divided between the two parties, big questions about the health of the Gulf of Maine and the future of our climate, challenges in the form of the opioid crisis, the housing crisis, the workforce crisis. It’s all beyond stimulating.
What does the partnership between NHPR and The Music Hall bring to New Hampshire?
New Hampshire Public Radio is delighted to be a long-time partner with The Music Hall—such a beloved institution on the Seacoast and throughout the state. Both our organizations pride ourselves on innovation and being part of the broader community. To approach things from that same mindset—and know that curious, passionate, culturally aware folks tend to gravitate toward both of our missions puts us on the same page from the get-go. I’d like to think, too, that we are able to bring even more outstanding writers to New Hampshire by working together than we could if we worked apart.
What are your favorite parts of the Writers on a New England Stage partnership?
Coming face to face with authors, getting a chance to ask them questions and hear the thinking behind their words is a privilege. We have great conversations with authors on our news programs and The Exchange. But there’s something special about being part of the scene at The Music Hall!
You went to the Michael Connelly WNES event in October. Did you enjoy the show? Absolutely! Michael and I were reporters together long ago at the Los Angeles Times, but I didn’t know the backstory behind the development of his great characters like Harry Bosch and Jack McEvoy. Plus, Michael told me backstage what he’s planning for Jack in the novel he’s writing now. So I know what Connelly fans have to look forward to.

Opinions on Valentine’s Day are mixed. Some people look forward to the day while others dread it. Whether you’ve been eagerly awaiting February 2020 (candy conversation hearts are back, people!) or you’re in denial, Valentine’s is the perfect time for a little treat. This is the day for a fine meal—or maybe two? Three? Six? After all, Valentine’s Day is 24 hours. Include Galentine’s Day on the 13th and you’ve got a full 48 hours to fill. Treat yourself—or someone you love—to a sweet or savory culinary experience.

Several of The Music Hall’s dedicated sponsors are available to help you celebrate in a special way. La Maison Navarre sponsors our ticket stock in addition to offering an expansive menu of options fit for any meal of the day. Start with breakfast in bed, or maybe wrap up the day with a glass at the wine bar. Why not do both? There’s a coupon for a 10% discount on the back of every one of your Music Hall tickets.
Another great late night spot serves as our Extraordinary Cinema Sponsor. Stop by The Wilder for craft cocktails and dinner and wile the night away. Flying solo? Saddle up to the bar and soak in the atmosphere.
Whether or not it’s a date night, be sure to include entertainment on your itinerary and join your friends at The Music Hall for a film. We're hosting a screening of When Harry Met Sally on Valentine's Day at 8pm in the Loft; see you there! XOXO!
