WELCOME TO OUR 2018-2019 SEASON

INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING & GIVING BACK

Each season ignites a fire for the next. I am constantly inspired by the programming and conversations we are able to bring through The Music Hall’s doors. As we are celebrating our 140th birthday, we are excited to share the astonishing season to come. From stunning singers and musicians to captivating cinema and writers, there is truly something for everyone at The Music Hall, and that is all thanks to each of you.

FIRST SATURDAY SEASON ON SALE

New

shows on sale—see pages 16-23!

This month, our “First Saturday” on sale event for members is Saturday, June 2. New shows go on sale to members at 10am for walk-up, at noon for phone and internet sales. Tickets go on sale to non-members Saturday, June 16 at noon.

To become a member, visit TheMusicHall.org or call 603.436.2400.

Some highlights from the past year include our expanding Innovation + Leadership series, which continued to present big issues and ideas with engaging speakers and leaders in the field through authors, artists, movies, and community members. The popular Writers on a New England Stage series once again brought Pulitzer Prizewinning and New York Times bestselling authors to the stage and the airwaves. The Ogunquit Playhouse’s production of White Christmas drew 16,000 people to the Historic Theater for the holidays, and this year’s musical, Elf the Musical, promises to bring joy and laughter to make your Christmas season memorable.

After 24 years, the School Days Series continues to introduce thousands of students to live theater; this year 6,000 students attended a wide array of educational and fun shows. For the second year in a row, we were able to fully subsidize the School Days Series experience for more than 600 students from two local Title I schools. With support from generous corporate, foundation, and individual donors, we intend to continue—and double—this program during the coming year.

As Executive Director, it’s my goal to make our shows and events as accessible as possible. In addition to our subsidized School Days Series program, we offered 63 shows under $30 and hosted several free events this year. We want the Seacoast area to feel like The Music Hall is your Music Hall. I hope you will join us as we celebrate our 140th year. See you soon!

MANY THANKS TO OUR MANY MEMBERS

May is a beloved month here at The Music Hall: It’s the month we get to celebrate all of our amazing members, and welcome so many new people to our membership family. It is because of all of you that we get to be the destination for indie films, celebrated authors, and comedians who make you laugh until you cry—not to mention all the music! With you in the audience, we welcome artists from Ray LaMontagne to Indigo Girls and everyone in between six nights a week.

We are so happy to announce that, with your help, we’ve met our match! So many of you contributed to Membership May last month, joining the family or upgrading your membership, that you’ve made it one of our most successful months yet!

To all our members, both new and those of you who we’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a long time, thank you. It’s because of you that we get to do what we love to do.

HERE & NOW

Chestnut Streetscape - Make a Grand Entrance!

The Chestnut Street renovation concludes this month with aesthetic and safety improvements, as well as a gift of public art from The Music Hall to the City of Portsmouth.

Last fall this public-private partnership between The Music Hall and the city widened the street for buses and vehicles, leveled the sidewalk for pedestrians, and buried utility lines. This spring we added greenery and public seating, creating a pocket park. With non-slick, easy to walk on pavers, this project creates a pedestrian-friendly walkway from Court Street to Portwalk, bringing foot traffic to the businesses along the way.

In addition to these safety improvements, The Music Hall gifted the Chestnut Street Arch to the city, to help make the street more visible, lead the way to the African Burial Ground Memorial Park, and give visibility to the theater. Inspired by Portsmouth’s historic nineteenth century arches, this piece of public art was designed and built by local artisans, including award-winning artist Terrence Parker. The arch was entirely paid for by dedicated gifts and was the first piece of public art to go through the new Art-Speak vetting and review process.

This project would not be possible without the support of generous donors and the city’s forward-looking vision. Additionally, a huge thank you to the vendors, and the whole team behind this effort. It’s been a big undertaking and The Music Hall is incredibly grateful for the collaborative effort made by all involved. See you on the street after the show!

Thank you to our Corporate Partners

Grand, Wild Westerns Just Announced For Film Club

The Western has been the major defining genre of the film industry, using the expanse of the American frontier—the border between civilization and wilderness —as the backdrop for indelible morality tales. In choosing six of the absolute best, made by big name directors both in America and abroad, we’ve also chosen films that defy the simplicity of White Hat vs. Black Hat: almost all of these movies generated controversy on their release, and their complex heroes and villains, portrayed by the finest actors of their time, have become enduring film archetypes.

HOSTED BY KENT STEPHENS:

Director/playwright/ performer Kent Stephens, professional theatre artist and cinema aficionado, has staged over 200 productions in the American regional theatre and off-Broadway. Kent served as head of the B.A. program in Theatre Arts at the U. of Minnesota, and has taught acting or served as guest artist at Cornell University, Emerson College, Carleton College, and most recently the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

But without a definitive Ginsburg biography, the unique personal journey of this diminutive, quiet warrior's rise to the nation's highest court has been largely unknown, even to some of her biggest fans—until now. THE GREAT SILENCE

NR • 1h 45m • Italy • some subtitles

6/9, 6/12 7pm

For the first-time ever, the 1968 pinnacle of the spaghetti western canon is available to North American theaters. Django director Sergio Corbucci’s crowning achievement stars Klaus Kinski and Jean-Louis Trintignant as a vicious bounty hunter and a mute gunslinger who lock horns in the snowy mountains of Utah during the Great Blizzard of 1899. The film is notable for its explicitly radical politics and dark tone, matched by an atypical snowbound setting and beautifully haunting score by Ennio Morricone.

Each year more than 3 million high school students take the college entrance exams required by most four-year colleges in the US. For decades, however, there have been questions about exactly what role these tests play in the admissions process and how predictive they are of academic success. The anxiety-provoking exams, and the multibillion-dollar test-prep industry, have also become lightning rods in the ongoing national debate over equity in educational opportunity.

OUR COMMUNITY

Let’s Gather Together to

Fight Hunger

This is our fourth year collaborating with Gather (formerly Seacoast Family Food Pantry) for the Fill the Hall Food Drive. We all look forward to this event every year, as it is core to our mission of giving back to the community, through the arts and to one another. Please join us this year on Saturday, June 23 to fill the Historic Theater with bags of non-perishables and donations to help the families in our community who need it the most.

Our yearly challenge to fill every seat helps Gather fuel their Summer Meals 4 Kids program, which aims to close the gap when subsidized school meals are not available. They provide 10 meals a week for over 400 children on the Seacoast for the 11 weeks of summer. It takes more than 12 tons of food to do this. All types of non-perishable foods are welcomed. Household items such as toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, and baby food are also needed.

Donors are encouraged to take a selfie on the stage of the Historic Theater and share their good work with their social networks. And those who don’t want to park can drop bags off with volunteers who will be outside The Music Hall entrance at 28 Chestnut Street.

For more than 200 years, Gather has provided emergency food aid, personal care products, and education for healthy living to Seacoast residents. Join us on Saturday, June 23 between 9am to 3pm to Fill The Hall with food or a monetary gift to help this organization. Find out more about how you can help at TheMusicHall.org. Learn more about Gather at GatherNH.org.
