Five years ago, we started a partnership with Boston ‘SteamCrunk’ ensemble and RPM Challenge favorites, Walter Sickert & the Army of BRoken TOys to stage a fundraiser for the Portsmouth Halloween Parade. The vision was to pair a classic silent movie with brilliant original live music accompaniment to help set the spooky stage for the upcoming parade. Taking place on the Historic Theater’s stage, the original score, the classic movie, and the iconic setting have created some of the most magical (and spooky) moments that I have experienced at The Music Hall.
If you haven’t had a chance to join us for one of these Halloween Wildcards, get your tickets for The Black Pirate (1926). It’s a swashbuckling tale of revenge, starring Douglas Fairbanks, with a score that was created just for this showing. If you’re not familiar with Walter Sickert & the Army of BRoken TOys, they are immensely talented and wildly unusual, the perfect match for these iconic silent movies. You’ll jump out of your seat, you’ll laugh, and you’re sure to have a great time. The perfect event to get you ready for Halloween...mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 25 and get ready for a night of Film and Music you won't soon forget.

This month, Patricia Lynch, Executive Director and Executive Producer of Writers on a New England Stage talked with celebrated author Dan Brown, who will be joining us at the Historic Theater on Thursday, November 9 with his newest book, Origin Learn more about his perfect Seacoast day, his foray into modern art, and what advice he’d give to young authors, and make sure to get your tickets to see him talk about his new book.

The new book, Origin begins with a futuristic unveiling "that will change the face of science" at the stunning Frank Gehry Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and explores modern art. That's a big architectural change up for our favorite code breaker and symbologist, Professor Robert Langdon, who tends to spend a lot of time in classic buildings with equally classical art. Was it a rush or a challenge to go into the ultra modern?
I’ve had so much fun stepping out of the classical world into the realm of modern and contemporary art. Here, masterpieces might include a 30-foot-tall puppy made of flowers, a wheelbarrow with a brick in it, or even a sculpture made of fog. While researching Origin, I was fortunate to spend time with modern art specialists and curators who shared with me their expertise and passion. I was able to ask them the one question that so many of us want to ask when we are trying to appreciate particularly bizarre works: “How do we know when something is great art, and when something is just strange?” The answers they offered me were both surprising and enlightening.
From all accounts you were a wonderful teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy and I know you care a lot about young artists whether they are musicians or writers. What was the best piece of advice you ever got as you were developing your considerable talents?
One very common piece of advice given to young writers is: “Write what you know.” The challenge is that we often feel what we know is not interesting enough to warrant a book. The more helpful piece of advice I received was: “Write what you want to know.” This outlook encourages a young writer to embark on journey of discovery and research, allowing his or her enthusiasm for a new topic to help fuel the writing process.
You have a passion for expanding the reader's knowledge base whether it's art, history, religion, or science, while taking them on a now famous Langdon thrill ride but I find in the core of your books an often deep philosophical question that is complicated and not necessarily easy to answer. Do you start with the thrill ride, the research/learning, or the question?
I always start a book by choosing an ethical dilemma that seems to have no clear answer. (e.g. Would you rather live in a world without science or without religion? Or, if you had to kill half the people on earth to save humanity, could you do it?) The answers to these kinds of questions live in that “gray area” between right and wrong and help me write books that (I hope) encourage readers to examine their own morals as they read.
A little hometown insight please. What's your idea of a perfect Seacoast day? Awake at 4am, spend five productive hours of writing, take a run on Jenness Beach (okay, truth be told, it’s more of a walk), navigate the day’s business calls while wandering our yard with the neighbor’s cat, drive to Portsmouth for early evening tapas at Cava or Upstairs at Massimo’s, and then enjoy a show at The Music Hall, of course.

It’s getting a little dusty on our street this month as the Chestnut Street Improvement Project gets underway. This fall, we are working with the City of Portsmouth to make necessary upgrades. Through our public-private partnership, we are able to bury the unsightly electrical lines, widen the street to make it easier for school busses and emergency vehicles to drive down, and make the currently very uneven sidewalks easier to walk down and plow during the winter months.
While all of the construction is taking place, we’ve moved our B2W Box Office over to the Loft, located at 131 Congress Street. Our box office is still open 12-6pm Monday-Saturday and shows and movies at the Historic Theater will go on as planned, with the theater opening up an hour before live shows and a half hour before movies.
To keep up with the progress, make sure that you’re following our social media channels as well as our blog. We’ll be posting pictures and important information throughout the construction. Also, as you walk down Congress Street, pop into the Loft and say hello to our staff and check out our more intimate space.

chatted with Morgan and Tara Rutman, the first supporters of our Give the Gift of Magic campaign, about the program that gives tickets to our holiday musical to families from Families First Health and Support Center and Cross Roads House. You were the driving force behind the creation of our Give the Gift of Magic campaign. What inspired your involvement? We both feel really strongly that we have been very blessed in our lives to have flexibility and options that we can avail ourselves of. I think it’s very hard for people not in the same position to find a way to explore the arts. We wanted to extend that opportunity to as many people as possible and feel it was a very fitting time of year to do so, as the holidays are a time of sharing, being charitable, and thinking of others. The whole idea around doing something in a viral way where one ticket sale spurs the next ticket sale was very appealing to both of us.
For those who may not be members yet, what would you say are some of the “unexpected benefits” of being a Music Hall member? Being introduced to a group of people in the Seacoast that I might not have crossed paths with. We really enjoy sharing in the affinity for the theater amongst new friends. So often at Music Hall events, we meet people that have the same warmth in their hearts for the organization, which we both love to see.
Thank you to our Corporate Partners

This summer, The Music Hall was saddened to learn of the passing of one of our founding board members, Norman Ritter. Mr. Ritter lived to serve, from his time in the Coast Guard; to his distinguished career as a journalist, where he spent some time in a Cuban prison before the Bay of Pigs, as well as being beaten in Alabama covering the Freedom Riders; to championing local nonprofits, and setting the foundation for the success of The Music Hall. We are deeply grateful to have had Mr. Ritter on our board for our first six years and extremely honored to be part of his extraordinary life.
“In the early days, Norm stepped up in so many ways, from his writing and editing skills that helped make our early communications professional, to securing our first large gift. Norm engaged his boss, Mike Dingman at Henley's Wheelabrator Technologies, to match gifts to The Music Hall of $1,000 or less, up to $100,000. This match generated some vitally needed capital at a critical time, building the foundation for this great organization.” - Jameson French, Founding Board Member/ Board Member Ex Officio

Over the last couple of years, we here at The Music Hall have been “Peased” to have Wentworth-Douglass Hospital (WDH) as one of our sponsors. Recently, WDH has come across the General Sullivan Bridge, to open a new facility on the Pease Tradeport that offers walk-in and other healthcare services. A full-service practice with board-certified family and internal medicine providers, the Pease facility boasts innovative technology that allows you to schedule appointments and prescription refill requests online. They even have virtual appointments.
Their dedication to health, wellness, and innovation make a partnership between The Music Hall and Wentworth-Douglass a great fit. Patricia Lynch, Executive Director of The Music Hall, explains the connection between art and healthcare: “The arts are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and a healthy community. Experiencing the awe of a live theater performance, enjoying the music of a favorite artist, or watching a film with 100 friends and strangers can provide a sense of hope, a feeling of fulfillment, and the comfort of belonging.”
“Our patients’ health and wellbeing are at the forefront of what we do. Art plays a powerful role in healthcare for many and we are happy to support The Music Hall,” said Gregory Walker, Wentworth-Douglass President & CEO.
Visit our blog at TheMusicHall.org for a more in-depth interview with Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. For more information about Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, visit WDHospital.com. You’ll be pleasantly “Peased”!
