Panel celebrates life and career of Albert Maysles
On Friday, June 26, The Music Hall Loft celebrated the late and legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles with a special screening of his last film Iris, featuring 93 year-old New York style icon and free spirit Iris Apfel. Following the film, a panel of special guests including the filmmaker’s daughter, artist Rebekah Maysles, and Portsmouth advertising creative and filmmaker Sean Tracey, a protégé and friend, led a panel discussion and Q&A about Maysles’ life and work.

“This is a great example of one way our film community programming happens,” says Programming Coordinator Chris Curtis. “Sean contacted us to see if The Music Hall would be interested in hosting an evening about Maysles and it led to this special film night and talk. It also speaks to the fact that Portsmouth is a town full of cinephiles. People think of the Music Hall when it comes to films that are not of the mainstream variety—and associate us with the idea that you can have a community related event based around film. It’s become very cool, popular, and exciting!”

Community Outreach with Chris Curtis
Programming Coordinator Chris Curtis joined The Music Hall in 2006. In the decade that’s followed, he has helped The Music Hall expand its community footprint with a myriad of programs that include the Film Matters series of documentaries and panel discussions, and artist workshops for young people who belong to local nonprofit arts organizations. Content Editor Regina Baraban chatted with Chris recently about how the arts can stimulate learning, and action, in the community.
What do you like best about your job?
One of my favorite aspects is programming our Film Matters series. We show six to eight top-notch documentaries a year, on topics that range from sustainable farming to feminism, followed by panel discussions. I really enjoy offering the experience of watching a stimulating documentary and then, rather than heading straight home, people can stay to hear from local experts and also join in the conversation.
How do you choose the films?
In my role as film coordinator, I’m constantly scouring the flow of information of what’s coming out on screens—and in particular, looking at documentaries that I think would resonate as Film Matters.
What recent Film Matters did you find most inspiring, and why?
On May 29, in affiliation with the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation, we showed the documentary, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, the story of the founders of the modern women’s rights movement. The film drew a huge audience of nearly 500 people, most of whom gave it a standing ovation and stayed for a fascinating discussion moderated by Barbara MacLeod of New England Cable News. The panelists, who ranged in age from 16 to over 80, had expertise and passion in equal measure and they left the audience with many takeaways. In this case, I did not select the panelists, but was fortunate to have the involvement of Mary Jo Brown (Brown & Company) and Terie Norelli, President and CEO of the New Hampshire Women’s Foundation. Mary Jo and Terie not only found subject-matter experts for the panel, but extended our community reach to other organizations. Everyone had a stake in making the evening a success, and it was a great community partnership.
In the cases when you source panelists for Film Matters discussions, how do you find them?
I head to the internet to find subject matter experts in the area, and I also contact our contributing partner, the University of New Hampshire, which is a fabulous resource. Typically I include one or more speakers from UNH per panel, and they’re all amazing and terrific.
Tell us about Music Hall partnerships with other Seacoast arts organizations. Arts in Reach and Portsmouth Music & Arts Center are just two examples of community partners that we have been working with for years. There’s a mutual benefit when we can give the young people in these organizations a close-up experience with world class artists. A wonderful example is the group of PMAC students who met in the Loft with world-class violinist Joshua Bell. After answering questions, he honored us by pulling out his violin and performing an impromptu piece of Bach. The youngsters who heard him will remember this forever. As will I!

Don’t miss our second season of the Left Bank Cabaret this summer! The Loft is transformed into a European-inspired intimate setting with signature libations and a series of artists who range from Nellie McKay to Ben Baldwin and the Big Note. Director of Operations Michael Tucker also undergoes a comedic transformation to return as our MC extraordinaire, Monsieur le Tuck Tuck. With his trademark cheeky flair, he shares some insights about what to expect this year.
What artists are you most looking forward for this series?
I enjoy the Wondertwins because they are amazing in how they dance like robots. They are perfectly in sync with each other— two parallel hip hop planets in a funkadelic universe. Also, last year they talked to me and were nice.
