Being in Portsmouth during the holidays always reminds me how magical this season really is. People coming together from all over to experience the magic that Vintage Christmas brings to town is so uniquely festive, it’s no wonder we’re the Christmas Capital of North America. As you’re reading this month’s magazine, our production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas has swung onto our stage; the iconic songs, phenomenal dance numbers, and the legendary Sally Struthers are going to delight your entire family. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, don’t wait, you aren’t going to want to miss this. Oh, and did you know that some of the best views on the stage can be seen from our balcony?
Being in one of our theaters, experiencing a performance with people that I’ve yet to meet, might be one of the best parts of my job. This is why one of my favorite gifts to give are tickets to shows. We’ve got a winter lineup featuring the European phenomenon, Benjamin Clementine (if you love the intensity of Leonard Cohen and the sound of Nina Simone, this one’s for you!), the charming Hot Sardines, and the New York Times best-selling author Jojo Moyes, and those are just a few of the can’t-miss shows we have in store for you. Head over to TheMusicHall.org for a full listing of everything we’ve got booked.
While you’re thinking about gifts, don’t forget that a Music Hall Membership is a gift that keeps on giving all year-long. Memberships have so many great benefits including early access to tickets and special discounts around town, and they start at just $50 per household per year. Right now, we’ve got a special membership promotion that you can learn more about on page 7.
Have a happy, safe, and joyful holiday season. I’ll see you at the theater!

Agnès Varda, 89, and JR, 34, have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a documentary in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR's photographic (and magical) truck.

With 78 shots and 52 cuts over the course of 3 minutes, Psycho redefined screen violence, set the stage for decades of slasher films to come, and introduced a new element of danger to the moviegoing experience. The screeching strings, the plunging knife, the slow zoom out from a lifeless eyeball: in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho changed film history forever with its taboo-shattering shower scene. Based on unbelievable but true events, comes a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie), and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan. Bobby Cannavale, Sebastian Stan, Mckenna Grace and Allison Janney also star.

Our next Film Club series will feature six excellent films with some of the alltime best music scores by the greatest composers. Hosted by Music Hall Film Manager, Chris Curtis.

As the curtain rises on the tale of two former WWII platoon buddies teaming up with fellow veterans of the 151st Division to aid their retired General, 100 of New Hampshire’s esteemed veterans will be in the audience. Together, they’ll experience the magic, camaraderie, romance, and hilarity of this classic story. Thanks to the generous gift of Jim Teetzel of Wilcox Industries and Michael Kane of The Kane Company, Veterans Count received tickets to Irving Berlin’s White Christmas to distribute to honored veterans for the Wednesday, November 29 performance.
“Our hearts are so embedded in the City of Portsmouth, that when the opportunity presented itself, we just couldn’t say no,” says Kane of their sponsorship. Kane and Teetzel have a close friendship spanning 30 years and counting, and are known for supporting the causes that are important to each other. “He’s the most generous guy I know,” says Teetzel. Kane responds, “next to you.”
For Teetzel, who founded defense contracting firm Wilcox Industries 35 years ago, supporting veterans is intrinsic to what he and his company stand for. He feels “very fortunate to have supported the military through the years,” and is aggressive in hiring retired veterans. In fact, it’s his team of 250 talented employees who are the motivation behind his community support. “A community that supports creativity attracts strong talent,” is his firm belief. Providing White Christmas tickets to Veterans Count is just one of the ways he combines that support with keeping a spotlight on veterans, believing we all have a responsibility to ensure that future generations never forget their service.
Kane agrees, and shares another personal motivation - as a Portsmouth native, he considers the Seacoast community “his team.” “Everyday, I put on my jersey and root for my team. I want to see my team win.” Kane is a former Board member of The Music Hall, and has been a Stakeholder for many years. His real estate firm, The Kane Company, was one of the first sponsors for our Intimately Yours series.
Both gentlemen enjoy contributing to the vitality of the Seacoast and feel that their desire to give back is not unique. “That’s what’s so great about Portsmouth,” says Kane, “there’s a lot of passionate people willing to pitch in.” Sounds a bit like a musical we all love about veterans, doesn’t it?
