FIVE EASY PIECES (1970) R • 1h 38m • USA
Tue., 7/19 @ 7pm • Loft
By 1970 Nicholson had already established himself as a formidable character actor who was capable of nimbly swiping scenes out from under bigger-name leads, but it was Five Easy Pieces that proved he was a star. Jack's performance as temperamental dropout Bobby Dupea, a trained concert pianist desperate to escape the rigidity of his upbringing, is both vulgar and literate, caustic and caring. Landing him his first of many Oscar nominations, his work with this role rises to fully inhabit a difficult and abstract space that could be qualified interchangeably as deeply fragile or explosively unstable.

Nearly 700 people came to see the premiere of Shadows Fall North at The Music Hall’s Historic Theater on May 26. Produced by UNH’s Center for the Humanities and Atlantic Media Productions, the film features the key players responsible for Portsmouth’s African Burying Ground memorial park, honoring the centuries-old souls discovered beneath city sidewalks more than a decade ago. A rallying cry to acknowledge untold stories of discrimination in Northern New England and set history straight, it brought the house to a standing ovation. “There’s a lot of love in the community for all of those responsible for the African Burying Ground project and for those who produced this film,” said The Music Hall’s Film and Outreach Coordinator Chris Curtis, adding, “The Music Hall is so proud of our long collaboration with the Memorial Committee.”
A post-film panel emphasized that these stories should be part of ongoing education efforts. “Our goal is to make the stories visible in whatever way we can,” said JerriAnne Boggis, historic activist and director of the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail. “If it is not visible and seen, the history does not exist.”
The Music Hall audience evidenced a renewed sense of community as they continued their post-show conversations. “It was so moving to be in that beautiful theater and feel the collective response to the film happening in real time around us,” said Katie Umans, Assistant Director, Center for the Humanities, UNH. “It’s something I will not soon forget!”

Together, these three local businesses have been Season Sponsors for a combined 13 years. Such longstanding partnerships provide the solid foundation from which The Music Hall can continue to serve audiences throughout the Seacoast for years to come.

We want to thank our Directors Club members and our generous hosts for the recent string of highly successful gatherings. Directors Club events, open to members at the Patron level and above, are a great way to socialize with other supporters of the arts and be introduced to new places around the Seacoast.
Recently, Directors Club members enjoyed:
• Traveling in style on a C&J bus to The Ogunquit Playhouse to watch the matinee performance of Anything Goes.
• An evening at the Atlantic Grill with small bites and beverages in souvenir cups.
• Contemporary Greek cuisine and cocktails at Tinos Greek Kitchen, the Galley Hatch’s new rooftop restaurant.
• Cocktails and hor d'oeuvres at Portsmouth’s newest rustic Italian Restaurant, Louie’s.
• A pre-show gathering at Martingale Wharf in preparation for Pink Martini.
• A post-show get together with Vaud and the Villains at The Friendly Toast.
• Socializing while making an impact at the Franklin Oyster House during the fall Oyster Happy Hour fundraiser (The Music Hall received 25 cents from every oyster sold!).
We’re lining up an exciting slate of Directors Club events for the fall, including exclusive experiences and festivities at a few spots you may not yet have visited. We'll be kicking off the fall line-up with a night out on the Gundalow in September— be sure to watch your email for your invitation!

by Thérèse LaGamma
Deputy Director of Programming
Thérèse LaGamma spoke with The Milk Carton Kids’ Joey Ryan in anticipation of the award-winning duo’s performance on Saturday, July 16. Read on to learn why their beautiful folk-harmony has resonated with highly lauded music producer T Bone Burnett and with audiences worldwide—and why they can’t wait to play in The Music Hall’s Historic Theater.

THÉRÈSE LAGAMMA: Has music always been important to you? Did you always want to be a musician?
Joey Ryan: Growing up, our house was filled with the marquee artists of the 1960s and 1970s—Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young—that’s who I internalized as being the gold standard. My mother sang in a folk duo in Berkeley, California, I learned to play some chords on her guitar, I studied clarinet and practiced every day. It wasn’t until the end of college that I developed a passion for songwriting and performing and started a little band.
TLG: You and Kenneth Pattengale retired your solo careers and became a duo in 2011. What made you decide on the name The Milk Carton Kids?
JR: The name The Milk Carton Kids comes from the title of one of our own songs: “I don’t feel the pain I once did, one day it just vanished like a Milk Carton Kid.” It’s a somewhat odd metaphor that refers to the awkwardness of youth that goes away when you come of age— something that you are happy to see disappear.
TLG: A few years ago, music producer T Bone Burnett asked you to perform at an all-star concert in New York celebrating the folk music tradition at the heart of the Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis. Was this a turning point in your career?
JR: Absolutely, this was the most consequential event of our career. A few weeks later, the movie came out, we got our first Grammy nomination, and then our 55-city tour sold out.
TLG: You’ve toured the world as a duo with minimal gear, just two guys with guitars and amazing folk harmony. What are your favorite types of venues?
JR: Well, I don’t want to seem pandering, but we love playing at historic theaters. Newer places can be acoustically perfect, but sometimes feel a little cold compared to the best rooms like the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. Theaters in small cities that are cultural centers for their communities are our favorite places to play. It’s no accident that we are coming to The Music Hall in Portsmouth!

In any consideration of the history of Hollywood's top leading men, there's one name that always dominates: Jack Nicholson. With a career spanning over half the time that movies have existed, he's brought a devilish grin and mischievous volatility to an extraordinary range of immediately recognizable roles. He's worked with some of the most iconic filmmakers in the industry, assembling a prodigious body of work across nearly every genre you could name. Holding the record for most Best Actor Oscar Nominations, he's also worked as a screenwriter, producer, and director, crafting a unique position as a creative force behind some of the silver screen's greatest critical successes. Examining a sampling of his most noteworthy works, from his early boisterous maverick years to later performances of seasoned nuance and subtlety, we'll take a penetrating tour through the life, motivations, and misadventures of one of modern cinema's most significant and enduring personalities.
